General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo glad I didn't watch the Harry/Meghan interview last night and enjoyed other tv programming. Not
only did I purposely miss it but knew the media would spend an inordinate amount of time analyzing and re-playing most of it over and over today. The Relief Bill is far more important, affects us all but then again makes Democrats, our President Biden in particular, look so good and the achievements of the Democratic party in general. Many thanks to the other Democratic members for their actions in making this happen.

(25,048 posts)Why do so many Americans care about the British royal family? Is it because of their soap opera-esque lives?
Personally, I don't give a damn about the royals from any country. Fuck them. They are relics of a destructive and dehumanizing era.
The British should save themselves a lot of money and cut the royals loose. They don't contribute anything to the world other than their personal dramas. Much like those other assholes, the Kardashians.

(1,430 posts)I also watched, on loop, Chuck Schumer get a closure vote on Merritt Garland with 17 other Senators because the Republicans went home, so I was giddy about that.

(13,538 posts)I've never had much for the "royal family", but when you marry into it you KNOW whats coming with it. You KNOW you'll be savaged by the tabloids if you're an outsider, etc.
This is no different than the women on "The Bachelor" crying over the guy kissing all the OTHER women; you knew thats how it worked when you signed on.

(58,785 posts)my husband surprised me by finding the interview and saying we'll watch this, okay? No kidding? He doesn't ever do entertainment/tabloid stuff. So we watched, ended up watching the whole thing!, and that means I can't post just to say I didn't.
But since I agree with your last, I did put that in my title.

(8,010 posts)we need to really be fighting for voting rights right now! I sympathize with Harry and Megan but yes, it is far too much coverage. The Royals are not even ours. It is a soap opera from another country. It is hard to see why it grips the attention of our media so unabashedly.

(2,673 posts)Since it followed 60 Minutes it was just on, and I thought I'd give it a chance. I found myself almost instantly captivated and 2 hours later it was over.
Sure lots of other stuff is more important, but this was truly interesting.

(5,111 posts)Couldnt look away. It was meaning to me in a broader sense because it paeralled my own experience (sabotage, backstabbing) as a black woman in corporate leadership.
I didn't watch from the beginning, but once I sat down, I watched the rest and found it interesting and very sad. Some of it was an eye-opener.

Im black and I was simply amazed. It went far beyond celebrity. It was a stunning portrait of racis. I didnt much care about the Royals, but glad I watched. I found it shocking.

(1,879 posts)Diana was treated like shit too. You either fit the script they want or you are exiled. Fergie too. At least Harry has stood with his wife and not cheating on her with.....whatever Camilla is. This story got old by the early 90's. The racism is another level but one way or another they find ways to get rid of who they consider beneath them.

I think a lot who did NOT watch it made assumptions about what it would be about. I hadn't really paid that much attention to the royals, and this was, as you said, shocking.

(5,507 posts)Let people be able to see it starkly as in this case with the sensational royal family in Britain.
What better way to get it out into the public awareness worldwide than a story about the royals.
I just don't understand the bashing of Meghan and Harry. They stood up to the ugliness that is part of the monarchy, and laid it bare for the world to see. Long, LONG overdue.

(4,466 posts)Truly disgusting how the royal family and establishment treated Meg and how the UK press vilified her in their coverage as compared to fair skinned Kate. I'm glad Harry had Oprah clarify this morning that the most controversial comments were not made by the Queen or Price Phillip, but I feel sorry for Prince Charles after the interview airs in the UK in about a minute. He's going to become even more unpopular than he is today!
