Two months and nearly 300 Capitol riot arrests later, the FBI is hunting hundreds more

In the two months since an angry mob forced its way into the U.S. Capitol, agents in all but one of the FBI’s 56 field offices have been drafted to track down those who participated in the deadly insurrection.

Investigators who typically work cases involving the trafficking of drugs, child pornography and sex have taken calls from rioter’s angry ex-wives and former girlfriends and employers turned tipsters.

They’ve mined tens of thousands of photos and videos. They followed trails the rioters left on social media bragging about being inside the Capitol, like the Florida man toting a rostrum or the New Hampshire man who snapped a selfie with a pilfered bottle of wine.

And they’ve arrested almost 300. But, as many as 500 remain at large of the 800 who Capitol Police believe entered the Capitol. The riot claimed five lives and cost millions in damages and cleanup in the historic building.

3. Insurrection not a coup, but if you are invested in the "coup" word please

refer to it as an "attempted coup". If it were a coup then power would have been transferred.

4. It's too early to call it a failed coup (or attempted coup).

I have no issue with "insurrection" to describe it - but "riot" ignores the underlying organization and directed purpose. I think we can agree on that.

5. It failed. If it were successful Pres. Biden would not be President there would be

some National Committee for Reconciliation and Public Safety calling the shots and hours of patriotic military music.

Lived through many coups and always wondered what Souza would have thought if he knew how much play time his music would get during a coup

7. I'm sure I'm not alone

in taking pleasure that the folks who haven't been caught yet are looking over their shoulders and waiting for that knock on the door, waiting to be charged with crimes that could put them away for years. Their state of mind is part of their punishment.
