days. I can only tell them that there is a binary choice and they need to understand how important it is to vote even when they might not agree with everything. This shit didn't happen overnight and it won't go away quickly. We are in for a long hard fight for common decency.

He votes for it because his constituents are transphobic, so he can't be attacked on it, and she opposes because she DNGAF.
No way Schumer would have let that into the bill (especially since it wouldn't have had anything to do with the budget, and couldn't be done in reconciliation).

7. I think almost everything Sinema and Manchin do needs to be viewed as strategy

They're being forced to take votes that their constituents oppose, so they do it when their votes won't change the outcome. Unfortunately Sinema had to make a show of it, and now she's getting ripped for a meaningless vote.

The Republicans are throwing this culture-wars raw meat to their "red n tooth and claw" base to distract them from attacking the party itself. We'll be seeing a lot more of this.

But,

In an executive order issued on his first day in office, President Joe Biden called for strict enforcement of a 2020 supreme court decision that expanded the definition of sex discrimination to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

If the amendment had been included, in the end it wouldn't have been enforced.

Another situation where I'm wondering if it was agreed that Manchin would vote against to satisfy his WV conservatives as long as it would be defeated anyway. Or not. For obvious reasons, tactical votes are not explained publicly.
