(46,579 posts)I thought I would be home free with my second shot this week. But now I am not sure.
I am certainly going to wear a double mask and not go into big crowds.
I was very active before the vaccine in various senior centers, but no way I am going into a crowded setting any more. And I do not think traveling is a good idea.
I used to love sitting in a Starbucks and people watching. And browsing and walking through an IKEA store.
I don't know if those are safe now even with the two shots.
It has been a very long year and we may still have to sit at home for the near future.

(46,579 posts)new normal. The variants are a wrinkle that the drug companies should be able to sort out.
Just a matter of time.
I felt significantly better about life right after my first vaccine jab.

(46,579 posts)I have a number of challenging hobbies and volunteer work I can do online.
Also I love to read and watch various kinds of programs and movies.
I am able to entertain myself and prefer it actually.
But even still, the year quarantine has been hard on me.

(46,579 posts)during the pandemic. Things have been really crazy at work for her during the pandemic and she hopes things will calm down once life is more normal for most people. She regularly is physically and verbally attacked at work.
Patients who are covid positive spit on her, won't wear their masks. Thank god she got the vaccine a couple of months ago.
So yes anyone in healthcare has not been bored this year. And in fact has faced increased danger.

(66,294 posts)However, I do spend a significant portion of my day telling patients: "Mask up over the nose, or it won't do any good!".
Every once in a great while, I'll have a patient give an Oscar-worthy performance as someone who can't breathe with a mask on. I note with amusement that not being able to breathe doesn't seem to prevent them from smoking, and they break character pretty quickly.

(46,579 posts)These are kids and parents coming in with serious emergency conditions. Kids who are suicidal, homicidal, total psychotic breaks, etc. There is a great deal of liability in terms of turning away a homicidal kid at the door.
And even if a seriously acting out 10 year old wears a mask at the door, it is unlikely he will continue to wear it all day. And the parents are just as bad.
It finally got so bad that the pregnant medical staff refused to treat these kids/parents and management finally allowed them to start throwing these folks out the door as soon as the kids were in any way stable.
Yes I know, the staff hate the patients with chin diapers. That is what they call the patients who wear the mask around their neck. They tell the patients, your mask is not a damn diaper, pull it up. Of course they don't swear but that is the tone in their voice.

(36,259 posts)My wife and I aren't social and prefer to stay home and keep each other company. So other then wearing masks and liberally using hand sanitizer when out and about , one observing us over the past couple of years probably couldn't tell that there is a major pandemic.

Ive got built-ins. Im in an MFA program and am writing a book. Im also a board president of an educational non-profit. That can be quite the trip.

(9,291 posts)Doing some reading, and Im waiting for my 2nd vaccine to get the full protection. My husband just got his 1st, so we wait. Im going to go to our local home goods store, just to see things in a store, on a shelf.
If lucky, for Mothers Day, we can walk around the Kentucky Horse Park. Its a pretty place, with beautiful animals. So I wait, and will wear a mask until the science tells were cleared.

(8,368 posts)have more to go, but we made a big dent in it.
Since then, I've learned to knit and am practicing Spanish on my own and with a woman from Columbia. We continue to enjoy our two dogs, who have made this isolation tolerable.
I just got my second Moderna vaccine today so I'm prepared for the rest of the world to catch up and hopefully we will have some normalcy soon.

(2,379 posts)I'm a retired percussionist, playing in several community orchestras(which of course are on hold) So-- I practice 2-3 hours a day, study orchestra and opera scores, ride an exercise bike (I'll buy a real bike in a month or so), walk at least an hour a day, work out at home as best I can, cook a lot. Sometimes swim at the Y early in the AM when nobody is there, never more than 4-5 people in the huge pool.... i feel pretty safe.....
Stay in touch with friends and professional acquaintances and classical music happenings around the world on, yes, FB, working my way through the Beethoven and Shostakovich quartets...
I'm not bored, that's for sure... but I sure miss playing in an orchestra. Hopefully, MAYBE something can start up in the fall in some form.. if republicans in the USA will wear their masks.

(2,220 posts)I have a ton of yarn to knit and as many, if not more, books to read. I have instruments to play and music to listen to. When the weather is nice, I walk several miles a day. I miss going to restaurants and getting together with friends, and this sometimes brings me down, but I have not been bored for one minute.
