- 'Princess Michael of Kent sorry for wearing 'racist' brooch,'- BBC News, 23 December 2017.

Princess Michael of Kent has apologised for wearing a brooch that critics have called "racist".

The royal, who married the Queen's first cousin, attended a Christmas banquet at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday wearing a blackamoor brooch.

Prince Harry's fiancée, Meghan Markle, who is mixed-race, was also a guest at the lunch.

A spokesman said the princess "is very sorry and distressed that it has caused offence".

Blackamoor figures and sculptures are exotic figures which usually depict African men and were prominent in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Princess Michael of Kent was born Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz in 1945, in the German-populated Sudetenland - now sitting in the Czech Republic.

She was born shortly before the end of the World War Two, in which her father served as a major in the Nazi SS.

After her first marriage to English banker Thomas Troubridge ended, she married Prince Michael of Kent - the first cousin of the Queen - in a civil ceremony in Vienna, Austria, in 1978...

.."There is no suggestion that Prince Philip – who fought against the Nazis in the Second World War – or any other members of the current Royal Family have Nazi sympathies. The photos have been seen before, but the documentary will serve as a further reminder of British royals’ past links to Nazis and Nazi sympathisers. Three of Philip’s four sisters, Margarita, Cecile and Sophie, were married to German aristocrats who filled senior positions in the Nazi party. None of Prince Philip's sisters were invited to his wedding to his wedding to the Queen in 1947"...

- (Town & Country Magazine, 2019), Princess Michael of Kent, Why Is She Controversial?

.. In the 1980s word began to circulate in the press that the Princess's father, Baron Gunther von Reibnitz, was a member of the Nazi party and an SS officer during WWII, creating a scandal for the newly-minted royal. More personally, the Princess has received negative press for several alleged racial issues, including the 2004 incident in which she was accused of telling patrons of color at a New York City restaurant to "go back to the colonies," though the Princess's Kensington Palace spokesman at the time stated that the story was "simply untrue."

At Christmas in 2017, she wore a racist "blackamoor" brooch to lunch at Buckingham Palace, for which she later apologized. The following year, a Vanity Fair essay by Lady Gabriella's ex-boyfriend Aatish Taseer shared an anecdote about the Princess naming two black sheep Venus and Serena. A spokesperson for the family declined to comment on that story...

He was at the very least a Nazi sympathizer. There are photos of him with Hitler in which he looks very pleased.

In another context on someone who isn't linked to Nazi sympathies, could it ever be seen as showing a black person as successful?

I mean gold colored clothing. Stylized, beautiful artwork. Is the source of the artwork so very racist that it contaminates the jewelry?

Never been rich enough to afford something like that.

Understand how a black jockey in the south on the lawn is racist.

Understand how Sambo and Aunt Jemimah are racist.

But when a black person is portrayed as rich and successful or beautiful is it not like a cameo? I just don't understand the depth of this insult. I believe it, but never heard of the jewelry before.

wore the decoration as an offense. If she had been of African heritage that's another matter.

- Blackamoor (decorative arts), From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blackamoor is a European art style from the Early Modern period, depicting highly stylized figures of black people. Common examples of items and objects decorated in the blackamoor style include sculpture, jewellery, furniture, and decorative art.

- "Moor with Emerald Cluster" by Balthasar Permoser in the collection of the Grünes Gewölbe

The term "blackamoor" is now viewed by some as racist and culturally insensitive.[1] However, blackamoor pieces are still widely produced, mainly in Venice, Italy.[citation needed]...

Racism is sneaky and it's hard enough knowing what it is in the US vs trying to figure out what all the buzzwords are on the other side of the pond.

I wish this art with black people wearing bling had a better connotation. It's kind of beautiful. And if blacks were wearing it with pride, it would be a lot different.

But people with hate in their heart can turn what is beautiful into dust and ashes with their awful ways.

Still, I think of Maya Angelou and The Bluest Eye, how a little black girl thought she would only be beautiful if her eyes were blue because the world didn't value her actual beauty.

Yet this art to me no matter it's intent says, HELL YEAH Black IS Beautiful!!!!

No matter what skinny white b***** tries to use it as a slap in someone's face. Her stupidity doesn't make black people any less. Her stupidity is all a reflection in her own ugliness. Beauty on the outside still raises a stank when some people open their mouths.

The House of Windsor The Windsor name now used by Queen Elizabeth II and other British royals only dates back to 1917. Before that the British royal family bore the German name Saxe- Coburg -Gotha.

No wonder they changed it.

Princess Margaret and Philip made plenty of racist remarks over the years. Besides, this is not really a British royal family. They were Germans and adopted the name Windsor. During WWI cousins were battling cousins, as the Kaiser and several other heads of state throughout Europe were all related to Queen Victoria.

Let's also take into consideration what the British did to the territories that they colonized, how they treated the population. On another note, why do these independent nations want to be part of the British Commonwealth? Haven't they had enough time to find their own identity without the yokel of the Crown?

Frankly, I think that the whole lot of them are a nasty bunch of mediocre people who would not have amounted to much without their money and titles.
