So I made a Reddit account to be able to read things, interact...

... with people in my more local community (state/metro/city)... but oh my god, it’s like NextDoor on steroids. Nosy, little pot-stirring....

...not like you guys. I can’t believe I cheated on DU for an afternoon. 🤢

And the communities which seem the default for certain topics probably suck too. r/feminism, for example, is the shittiest feminism forum on the internet, and that’s saying something.

Lots of the silly political memes people post here are from reddit.

I do agree that a lot of the posts are really bad.

I have noticed the political reddit page during the primary was VERY pro Bernie and somewhat anti Biden and after the primary it became VERY pro President Biden. There are a LOT of pleasantly surprised Bernie supporters.

The DU vegan forum is pretty minimal here. But, reddit has a very robust vegan subreddit.

I DEFINITELY prefer DU to reddit. But, I also like going there.

If you have a somewhat specialized interest, there's probably a sub full of knowledgeable, supportive people to talk to. But yeah, most of the big popular forums are (sometimes entertaining) trainwrecks 24/7.

The mods are a little power hungry but overall it is heavily liberal and the R community is supportive and informative on local issues.

I guess I just lean towards the more dog-oriented subreddits.

But I also do like r/politics and r/AskReddit as well as purely sweet ones like r/aww, and some about travel and money management and....

There are some beautifully supportive subreddits as well. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Reddit, but I've got to say that my experience has been 100% the opposite of yours.

Like the moderatorship is more strict. How can I have more free speech here than on that site, I thought that’s literally where all the crazies were talking, and started talking? It’s almost like if I comment on things I feel about my neighborhood (that are well structured and formatted into debate style speech) are being given warnings and being censored?
I don’t know, I’m not really liking it.

And people are touchy and have different opinions, versus how we here mostly agree on a wide spectrum of topics.

I bet if it wasn’t news, politics, or community, it wouldn’t be this way.

I’ll join some more lighthearted groups and see if that changes things.
