General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe FBI has captured data from every phone call from in and around Capitol on January 6th.
I heard Lawrence O'Donnell mention this on his show last night.
They were able to get all the carriers to cooperate and they now have what could be a goldmine of information?
They have not only the data of calls from the insurrectionists but also the calls from Congressmen, Senators, and all their assistants.
I assume this would also include the White House?
(I suppose this could explain why Senator Hawley was so interested in asking Christopher Wray about phone data collection, when he was questioned the other day?)

(17,802 posts)those are logged, though not their voice counterparts. They may have some though by other means.....
But really, who makes voice calls anymore? The texts may be the more valuable component.

(17,802 posts)but I do remember something to the effect that he couldn't reach tubby directly, and whoever he did reach handed the phone to tubby after a brief exchange. So hat call wasn't a butt dial as far as I know.

(42,770 posts)Guess my only point was that he made the call and if he had them in contacts it wouldn't be close to Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. Lol. Not important.. but evidently he's phoned the wrong person multiple times.

(10,702 posts)Actual MSMs yes. They wont have Apple Messages and messages sent via apps.
getagrip_already
(17,802 posts)I believe all messaging companies must preserve text messages, even those encrypted, for a set period of time.
And it's already been reported that the feds have submitted encrypted text messages into evidence...... So they have some methods available to them.
Plus messages have been hacked out of platforms like parlor and (I'm blanking on the name, but it was in the news in the past 2 days).
The feds haven't been sitting on their thumnbs in the face of apps offering secrecy. They have been actively undermining them so they can listen in, or can when they want to. Snowden alluded to some of it, but even he didn't know all of it.

(10,702 posts)If people used encrypted app messaging they dont have access to those - and lots of people use those systems.

(3,598 posts)Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was in direct contact with rioters before and during Capitol breach, U.S. alleges
Prosecutors said they had recovered a chat called DC OP: Jan 6 21 on the encrypted Signal messaging app that shows that individuals, including those alleged to have conspired with [others], were actively planning to use force and violence.
My guess is that the Feds were able to access the messages through one of two obvious routes:
1. One of the participants in the message thread flipped to save his own sorry ass and gave the Feds access to the messages on his device.
2. One of the participants in the message thread was a dumbass who left the encrypted app "open" all the time so he didn't need to enter a password every time he wanted to use it, which left the messages exposed to anyone with access to his phone.

(25,111 posts)So far as the content of the calls, if warranted, it can be obtained.
This was in fact an attempt to overthrow the government of the United States of America, and republicans can gaslight it all they want, but most people in America and the world do live in reality.

(23,181 posts)In terms of preserving our democracy, that is one of the most consequential changes that Biden's victory brought about. I think a whole lot of extremists grew lax knowing that Trump had their backs, and they believed their own wet dream that there was no way Trump wouldn't remain president for four more years, if not longer.

(54,488 posts)He's an educated guy so his questioning was puzzling, he surely couldn't have the idea that information wasn't collected and available. So in my mind he was either testing Wray to see if he was going to play ball, or he was alerting the participants who could make their choices based on that information.

(9,017 posts)I'd like to know if the carriers really just handed it over or were coerced in some way (or if it really even happened).
Most companies will fight tooth and nail to avoid handing over private customer information, especially in full daylight. Remember how Apple refused to unlock that phone for the FBI a while back? I have to say that did inspire confidence in their security tech.
