I think it would be fine for Biden to put his name on relief checks -- here's why

The reason it was such an affront when Trump put his name on last year's relief checks (apart from the fact that Trump was just an affront generally) is because the stimulus package that passed in March 2020 was a truly bipartisan effort.

The CARES Act passed 96-0 in the then-Republican-controlled-Senate, and subsequently passed the House in a voice vote, meaning that there was not significant opposition.

So when Trump ordered the IRS to add his name to the checks -- the first time a president had done this -- it was as if he and he alone were responsible for providing that money to people. He tried to take full credit despite the fact that Democrats worked with Republicans to get the checks out.

So you know what? Since President Biden's Covid relief package passed the Senate WITHOUT A SINGLE REPUBLICAN VOTE, and since it will likely pass the House WITHOUT A SINGLE REPUBLICAN VOTE, I have no problem whatsoever if Joe wants to put his name on the checks -- and they should put Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer on there too.

In fact, maybe they should also add a line that says "Every single Republican in Congress voted against you getting this money."

Edited to add: to clarify, this post is kinda-sorta-but-maybe-not-really-tongue-in-cheek -- I know that Joe is highly unlikely to put his name on the checks, and I get that people think it would be crass to do so. But on the other hand... the fact is that the passage of this bill is, as the man himself might say, a big fuckin' deal, and we do need a full court press to make sure voters know who was for it and who was against it...

But I don’t think that’s a priority to him. I don’t think he cares who gets the credit, as long as Americans get help.
