The ONS (Office for National Statistics) had issued guidance on the question What is your sex? which seemed to encourage people to answer according to self-identification. The court has ruled that this question should be answered according to sex or what is on a gender recognition certificate. The guidance now reads: If you are considering how to answer, use the sex recorded on one of your legal documents such as a birth certificate, gender recognition certificate, or passport.
The emergency court case was brought by the group Fair Play for Women, which argued that "If we don't have good data on sex we can't monitor inequalities due to sex, and if we can't measure it, we can't make good policies to remedy it."

(4,429 posts)though I've not seen evidence that supports that.
Ms. Toad
(38,824 posts)believing that whites are superior to non-whites.
TERF = believing women AFAB are superior to transgender women (who are not - by their definition - "real" women).
Same issue/attitude toward those who are different.
janterry
(4,429 posts)but if you believed that, I could see why you would want to make that accusation.
Ms. Toad
(38,824 posts)I've been around TERFs since the late 70s. They certainly do believe that women AFAB at birth are superior to trans women, who they believe to be some combination of delusional, mentlally ill, or imposters.

(9,989 posts)Never could. As a (cis) woman, I say trans women are women and I'm proud to stand with them. Any form of feminism that excludes them doesn't speak to me or for me.
janterry
(4,429 posts)and everyone benefits from that (including those that identify as trans)
Withywindle
(9,989 posts)That's the only way to gather data on how many trans people there are. In the current climate though, I definitely understand why a lot of people would be afraid to answer that question.
janterry
(4,429 posts)that it made it seem that people should answer the sex question the same as self-id. So, you wouldn't know the trans-identified population.
This way, they can collect good data on BOTH.

(27,703 posts)...and, if its simply recognition that you identify with a gender other than the one recorded at birth, how difficult is it to get one? Does it require completing a certain level of surgical transition, or is it just something settled by a sworn statement?

(10,497 posts)In the UK a doctor has to provide details of surgeries performed or planned.
janterry
(4,429 posts)I found this in a newspaper fact-checker:
Government Equalities Office, which oversees the process by which people can change their legal gender in the UK, told FactCheck today that: You do not have to be taking hormones or planning to get surgery to get a GRC and its not in the legal requirements that someone be taking, or planning to take, hormones.
So, I guess the answer is still no, you don't need hormones or surgery. It does require a clinician, though.

Isn't that a good thing?

(4,429 posts)But this is about self-id - which is a big topic in England.
It will be here, too, I think - in the next few years
