Rep. Katie Porter
@RepKatiePorter
A Big Oil exec told me I had a "misconception" about a special tax break polluters get that other businesses don't.
So, after explaining the deduction to him, I offered to write it out of the tax code if that what he wants. Just let me know!

(82,849 posts)Come with your best facts, and leave the "we don't get special treatment" nostrums at home. Rep. Porter used to be a professor. She knows this stuff cold. And her closing remark that if the oil and gas industries are serious about not wanting to get special treatment, she will surely deliver that for them. You could see the executive's mind working about how to go to industry gatherings and face everyone after he'd screwed their sweet deal on deductibility.

(33,400 posts)and the Oil Exec knows it. That's one of the reasons he chose to fling shit instead of defending the utility of that tax break.
How do he and I know that it won't go away? THE SENATE STILL EXISTS.

Rep. Porter does a great job of puncturing the giant gasbag.
Cue Republicans complaining that she was unladylike and doing a "gotcha" questions.
Well, guys, if you don't like "gotchas," you might consider telling the truth now and then.

(6,849 posts)down in person, in the hot seat at their witness desks, in front of congress, their friends and their enemies. So much of the drama of righteous victory is lost in the zoom era. The time delay misrepresents the action, confusing the emotions that make the moments.

(11,567 posts)Apart from all the intelligence, knowledge and willingness to bring it all to bear on hapless idiots that deserve it, she has a sharp lawyer's mind. Never have I known her to ask a question to which she didn't already know the answer. She has, quite literally, written the book on a lot of the legislation and policy she tackles.
I am SO impressed with her...and learned to love her to pieces when I saw her on Real Time. All of the above, and a wicked sense of humour that is also very funny.

(2,966 posts)She studies the issues in detail before going up against these witnesses. Much of the time she already knows this stuff long in advance owing to due diligence and intellectual curiosity.
Then, the witnesses come in thinking she has only a cursory knowledge. And they get shellacked.
