(10,206 posts)I've been nipped a few times, by overexcited dogs. The owners, in each case, expected me to take far more umbrage and offense than I did (which was none), and were surprised and appreciative at my responses, which were (1) Dog is a good dog; (2) Dog is a dog; (3) Sometimes it happens.

(7,847 posts)In fact, the Secret Service may have dogs on duty too, but Major, an amateur, clearly has the right instincts.

(6,377 posts)Dogs are sensitive animals. Champ and Major have been living in a completely new environment, constantly surrounded by people and agents that they don't know and aren't comfortable around, and their routines are completely upended. It can be very overwhelming.
If one of them got a little aggressive, I could hardly be surprised. It's natural for them.

(11,635 posts)All the activity of the White House and many people including security quickly coming in and out of "Mom and Dad's" space is probably confusing and stressful for the young dog.

(15,224 posts)Champ and Major are part of the Biden family, and families deal with family issues. We dont know the specifics of what happened, but any dog owner would and should take an incident seriously. You simply have to - even though its almost always an ill-informed human who causes a dog to nip or bite.
Ive seen idiots run up to unfamiliar dogs and grab them. What do these people think a dog is going to do? Plus, you always have the people who will make a mountain out of a mole hill to get a pet in trouble. Some idiot who thinks a rescue dog shouldnt be in the White House, for example. Dont even get me started on the idiots Ive witnessed who have come after cats.
Joe and Jill handled the situation and when the dogs return, Im betting steps will be taken so that there is no chance of this ever happening again.
Just to be clear here - Im on Majors side!!!

(13,579 posts)frightened by large dogs since childhood. I came close to being attacked as a child by a large dog and have never gotten over that fear. I am also a tiny woman (under 100pounds) and fear being knocked down by large dogs. I am happy they are back at the WH, but it sounds like Major needs more training. Hope he gets it.

(9,464 posts)"Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former President George W. Bush, put it more bluntly on TODAY Thursday: Barney was a real jerk, she said.
"He was a little temperamental," Hager said, drawing gasps from TODAY anchors Willie Geist and Al Roker. "I feel bad saying that, but he didnt like strangers.

(9,464 posts)I actually had trouble sleeping last night when I read about it shortly before going to bed. Major didn't know the person and perceived him/her to be a threat. I have no doubt that whatever happened will not happen again. We all make mistakes, even dogs.
