And the anticipated 2021 stimulus checks are going to put them even further behind this time around. The deadline needs to be extended yet again, but though it's fast approaching, the IRS has refused to budge. They're asking for additional funding when this country can least afford it.

And we've only had this new administration for a little over a month, they can only get to so much all at once. I also support extending the deadline, they haven't been able to keep up with last year's tax season, the stimulus checks are coming and people are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic. Apparently, Rettig has insisted that the IRS can handle both, though Texans affected by the massive power outage last month have an extension till June 15th. More pressure needs to be exerted by the rest of the states.

5. Congress Is Poised to Upend Tax Season With New Break for Unemployment Benefits
Wed Mar 10, 2021, 01:46 AM
Mar 2021
Congress is about to change a piece of the tax code affecting the returns being filed by as many as 40 million Americans—a month after the tax-filing season started. The move, approved by the Senate on Saturday and headed for House passage on Tuesday as part of the coronavirus-relief bill, would exempt the first $10,200 of 2020 unemployment benefits from income for households that made under $150,000. That could save households about $25 billion, but implementing the change would be a challenge for the already-burdened Internal Revenue Service, and it could lead to unusual disruptions.

As of late February, the IRS had already received more than 45 million tax returns, some of which will now likely have to be amended. And the IRS will need to reprogram its computers to include the new, retroactive change as people file returns to take advantage of it. That is happening during an already messy tax season complicated by the coronavirus pandemic, remote work and a pile of other tax-law changes.

... States will need to adjust their own computer systems, alert taxpayers and prepare to accept amended returns, said Verenda Smith, deputy director of the Federation of Tax Administrators, an association of state tax agencies. But states don’t want an extended deadline either, because that brings its own costs in staffing and delayed revenue.

========================================

It's for a good purpose, but couldn't they figure out some other way than screwing up 2020 taxes? Edited to add: if the IRS can figure it out themselves, and I don't know why they can't, and just send a refund for the difference, then that would be great. But if they require people to amend their federal and state tax returns in order to get it, as the above excerpt seems to indicate, then, ARGGHHHHHHHH.

Edited to add the "States will need to adjust" paragraph in the excerpt above. Also I bold-faced the "amended" stuff in the above excerpt.

of unemployment. I actually hunted around to see if there was any legislation that might affect my taxes, but I didn't see this.

I lost my job in May due to Covid, so if this resulted in a refund for me, I could use it.

Thanks for the heads up, progree!

Some observers told MarketWatch they wouldn’t be surprised if the Biden administration wanted to stick with Charles Rettig, the IRS commissioner and a Republican who started in 2018 after a legal career defending individuals and businesses with tax disputes.

“If Biden wants more money for the IRS, better to have a Republican commissioner ask for it than a Democratic IRS commissioner ask for it,” said Gleckman.

but I had simple taxes which didn't change in kind from last year, I was getting a small refund, I can use free filing via IRS partner. It seems, given that there was a potentially massive change in taxes just passed that some delay might be wise.

March 21, 2020

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service are providing special tax filing and payment relief to individuals and businesses in response to the COVID-19 Outbreak. The filing deadline for tax returns has been extended from April 15 to July 15, 2020. The IRS urges taxpayers who are owed a refund to file as quickly as possible. For those who can't file by the July 15, 2020 deadline, the IRS reminds individual taxpayers that everyone is eligible to request an extension to file their return...
