Tennessee panel votes to remove bust of notorious confederate general from state capitol

The Tennessee Historical Commission on Tuesday voted 25 to 1 in favor of relocating the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest to the Tennessee State Museum ...

Gov. Bill Lee now has permission to remove from the Tennessee state Capitol the bust of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, a process he has pursued much of the last year despite resistance from the legislature, which continues to push back against the statue's relocation...

It's unclear how soon the relocation process will begin, however, or whether a recent request by Tennessee's House and Senate speakers for an attorney general's opinion on the matter will cause further delay...

Note:
Forrest was a confederate cavalry general who amassed a fortune as a plantation owner and slave trader in Memphis before the Civil War. One of his vilest actions took place in April 1864, when soldiers under his command murdered an estimated 200 black union soldiers who were trying to surrender at Fort Pillow... Forrest was also the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Nathan Bedford Forrest Statue is a 20 feet (6.1 m) tall statue of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest on a horse in Nashville, Tennessee, located near Interstate 65 at 701D Hogan Road. The statue depicts Forrest shooting behind himself and is flanked by Confederate battle flags. It is generally considered aesthetically unappealing due to its abnormal facial features, which bear little resemblance to Forrest himself, and more resemble a screaming deformed man.

a public park in Memphis in 2017.

This statue is a large bronze sculpture depicting a mounted Forrest wearing a uniform of the confederate army. Until Dec 2017 It was located in a Memphis city park. The statue was cast in Paris and brought to Memphis in 1905.

Officials in Memphis managed to get the statue removed from the park on December 20, 2017, even though the repugs in Nashville had recently passed laws to try to prevent all removals of confederate monuments and statues anywhere in Tennessee. The officials in Memphis found a way to circumvent these lews.
