(5,534 posts)I think Speedy is fine as long as they portray him differently. Pepe le Pew is irredeemable.

(5,534 posts)but, upon such things Disney made billions, so I'll take a stab at his status.
Given that Speedy was "created" (i.e. born) at the Termite Terrace animation building, on the Warner Brother's (and the Warner sister, Dot) studio lot in 1953, that would make him a citizen. His parents were Friz Freleng, Hawley Pratt and Mel Blanc.

They embodied the racist lazy Mexican stereotype. I never got that stereotype either, since Mexican immigrants seem like some of the hardest working people around. Where did it come from?
Anyway, the most racist part about Speedy himself was probably that he was voiced by a white man, Mel Blanc, using a comically over-the-top Spanish accent. In all his recent appearances, hes actually been voiced by a Latino, neutralizing that controversial aspect of him.

(26,058 posts)It wasn't the Hispanic community that found him offensive. They loved him.
It was the 90s Karens that were offended.

(11,222 posts)obvious today. For those of us as children, having watched Pepe or John Wayne putting a grown woman over his knee hitting her and cringing uncomfortably not quite sure what we were watching and why it was ok to treat certain groups of people in this manner, even for entertainment and laughs, not such a big deal seeing the images disappear.

Fuck these cartoons as well. Oh excuse me, amine which is....Japanese cartoons
Historically, the trope has referred to otherworldly spirits like Koenma from Yu Yu Hakusho who, although hes 700, looks like a toddler (complete with a pacifier). Theres also classics like the badass fighter Lady Kayura, whose hundreds-year-old lifespan isnt apparent with her 12-year-old looks. Its not always sexual. And its not always young girls. But lately, theres been a lot of that, and oh man is it gross.
Now, there are, for example, childlike goddesses who are literally referred to as loli big boobsI see you

I am telling you, all kind of incredible is going on, in a time women are being rejected and scolded, a finger wagged, because they have voice. Talk about fuggin cancel culture.
It is all good.
Someone is talking about an "amorous" Frenchman like that is a reason. Lets talk about their sexist culture.

(76,132 posts)Yes, there are stereotypes, but more like old west, or 19th century southwest Texas style.
And, Speedy always wins! On top of that, it's usually because he outsmarts the cat.
Because of Speedy's continual success, it's much less offensive & far less creepy than a skunk that doesn't know what "no" means.

(23,826 posts)These were incredibly racist cartoons, even for back then and they contributed to attitudes that are still a problem today. Nothing wrong with recognizing how bad they were and acknowledging that they probably shouldn't be accepted today.
