Washington Edwards, age 87, born 1802. Died at 103 years old, 1905. According to the writing on the back of this photo, Edwards was brought to the United States from Africa, leaving behind a wife and family. He came to Texas shortly before the Mexican War (1846). He never forgot his native African language. Prints and Photographs Collection, 1905/11-1. Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

These people working so hard to live the American dream in the face of such malicious oppression and unnecessary obstacles fascinate me. This picture was taken 40 years after the Civil War. I'd love to learn their stories.
