There's no deep mystery to Hawley. He's an intelligent person with massive ambition who was raised from birth in the Limbaugh-Falwell cult, and instead casting away childish things when he came of age, he instead doubled down and became a professional crusader for the faith. That's not an uncommon story in Republican politics. Even Ted Cruz largely fits that mold.

Take someone who is genuinely talented, fill them near-sociopathic ambition, and then indoctrinate them into a fringe belief system that explicitly positions itself against objective reality and common decency, and you are guaranteed to end up with a deeply problematic person.
