3 Selected jurors so far.
1 biracial female - age 20's/30's
2 Caucasian males - age 20's/30's
Now this is just my opinion & concern, but it only takes 1 juror to muck it up.
I hope I'm proven wrong in the end.

(115,674 posts)They have selected only three jurors, about whom we know nothing except for the above; they have to interview 24, and jury selection will take a couple more weeks. Hung juries are actually pretty rare, and if they allow the additional 3rd-degree murder charge it will be even more unlikely.

(15,325 posts)I've maybe see enough high profile cases where that 1 lone juror revealed their bias & intent long after the trial was over.
It happens, & considering the nature of this murder trial, I do not know how they can get close to an impartial jury.
I hope I'm wrong & Chauvin is sent to prison for life.
I would not be considered an impartial juror, btw. 🤬

(34,857 posts)Could it happen? Sure. But with how rare it is, I wouldn't predict that it would happen.

(34,439 posts)at least on the third degree murder charge.
The whole world saw the murder happen this time and there are no ambiguous circumstances.
I hope there is no monumental procedural screwup.

(115,674 posts)JURORS THAT WERE NOT SELECTED
Juror No. 1, a woman, was dismissed by the defense using a peremptory challenge. The prosecution and defense can decide if they want to use a peremptory challenge to strike someone from the jury without needing to provide a reason why. Prosecutors have nine of these challenges while the defense has 15.
Juror No. 3, also a woman, was quickly dismissed for cause by Cahill because she already had opinions on the case, and seemed to be convinced of Chauvins guilt.
Juror No. 4, a man, also was dismissed by the defense using a peremptory challenge. The prosecution opposed, and used a Batson challenge, which is when one side thinks the other side is striking jurors based only on race or gender. The two times the defense had used a peremptory challenge was for potential jurors who were Hispanic.
Cahill did not agree with the prosecution, and said that juror No. 4 should be dismissed because he had opinions about the case that he would not reverse unless told to do so.
The prosecution used their first peremptory challenge to strike juror No. 8, who said he had high respect for law enforcement and disagreed that a police officers actions should be second-guessed.
Juror No. 10, a man, was excused by Cahill due to his busy work schedule and some safety concerns he voiced for himself and his family.
Juror No. 17, a 19-year-old man, said he was anxious and overwhelmed about being a potential juror for this case. He also expressed concerns about jury duty conflicting with his school schedule. Additionally, he said that he doesnt trust the Minneapolis Police Department. Cahill excused him.

(3,784 posts)A cop kills a minority person. The police department does nothing about it. The community rises up and has massive protests. Eventually, after much hemming and hawing, the cop is usually suspended (not fired) and the State charges the cop with SOMETHING. The trial starts, and all the people who protested get their hopes up that ACTUAL JUSTICE might happen. The jury acquits the cop.
Rinse, repeat. This is how it ALWAYS goes down.

(4,759 posts)There is a big chunk of society that believes cops can do no wrong and it won't make any difference if they have seen the video or not. It is why cops are hardly ever convicted. It would be almost impossible to not end up with at least one of these folks on the jury. I am praying that I am wrong but I am not very optimistic.

(15,325 posts)Same here.
I don't trust that one of those types will be kept off the jury.

They're good liars too, esp when they feel their goal is to gently pat Chauvin on the back.
