Morning Joe panel bursts out laughing at GOP senator's over-the-top meltdown about voting bill

The "Morning Joe" panel dissolved in laughter on Wednesday after reading a report that Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) unleashed a furious attack on the H.R. 1 bill designed to secure voting rights for all Americans.

As the panelists discussed the Republicans' obsession with cultural issues involving cartoons and Dr. Seuss books, co-host Mika Brzezinski interrupted to read a quote from Lee who said of the "For the People Act" that "Everything about this bill is rotten to the core. This is a bill as if written in hell by the devil himself" during an appearance on Fox News.

That led co-host Joe Scarborough to burst out laughing before he allowed Associated Press White House correspondent Jonathan Lemire to weigh in first. "So, Jonathan, they're saying that Satan drafted -- Mike Lee is saying Satan drafted a bill that's meant to get more Americans involved in democracy," Scarborough said while smirking.

"That's an unlikely move for Lucifer," Lemire first deadpanned before grinning. "But we're seeing their inability to hit on Biden resulting in culture war issues."

The GOP is the party of voter suppression. Former CH Rehnquist got his start in GOP politics as a meber of a GOP goon squad in Arizona that challenged non white voters for daring to vote. https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Rehnquist-on-Voting-Fairness-Chief-Justice-2690688.php

In 1962, Rehnquist was the leader of Operation Eagle Eye, a crew of Republican lawyers who roamed precincts in south Phoenix challenging the qualifications of minority voters. Rehnquist's role in the actual interrogation of blacks and Latinos waiting to vote is murky. At Senate hearings on his nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971 and to the chief's spot in 1986, Rehnquist denied "challenging the qualifications of any voters."

But several witnesses -- including San Francisco lawyer James Brosnahan -- told a different story.

Brosnahan testified at the 1986 hearings that in 1962, when he was an assistant U.S. attorney in Phoenix, he received complaints that GOP operatives were stalling voters at a heavily Democratic precinct by accusing minorities of being unable to read. Some states had long used literacy tests to prevent minorities from voting, but federal law banned the practice in 1964.

The asshole who formed ALEC and founded the Heritage Foundation was clear on this

The GOP has to cheat to win elections

All the Republicans have to offer presently are culture clash dust ups, fear, and grievances. They're unable to offer any policy ideas that would attract and maintain the attachment of the working class voters that they so desperately desire because they fear the criticism and primary election battles that Donald can stir up. I think we can justifiably call them empty suit politicians because they left their guts and spines behind when they gave Donald the title of Republican Pied Piper.
