(26,008 posts)are still being spoken. But Olmec??
róisín_dubh
(12,336 posts)don't even know what exact language they spoke. And anyway, Olmec is a made-up name.
wnylib
(26,008 posts)It's the name the Nahuatl speaking people gave to the civilization that we call Olmec. Most lingustic evidence points to the language of the Olmec people being related to the Mixe and Zoque languages. There are people today who speak variations of Mixe and Zoque languages, but to say that Olmec is still being spoken today is a big stretch, since it might have been from the same linguistic family but not have been the same language.

(132,429 posts)This is the difference when you have an educated career diplomat like Amb. Jacobson who can converse in several languages, versus a Trump appointee whose language skills include speaking in tongues.

I admire that you can speak Russian, it is a difficult language to learn and use fluently I am told......
MineralMan
(151,259 posts)In reality, the USA was never in danger of having to learn to speak Russian. That is an enormous exaggeration. It is also an impossibility.

(24,982 posts)as they are highly inflected. I'm told that in some cases even proper names are inflected - the name you are called is not the same case as the name you sign to a contract.
OnDoutside
(20,868 posts)chances a lot of good, in elections, if they took the time to learn Spanish so that they could speak directly to a demographic that the Democratic Party would really like to reach.

(43,307 posts)porque los Latinos son Americanos, también.
Así le ganamos a los republicanos, hablando en español a nuestros potenciales volantes a traves de la prensa.
A BFD because Latinos are Americans, too.
This is how we beat Republicans, speaking Spanish to potential Latino voters through the press.

(43,307 posts)should include translations and/or subtitles in the other language, in my opinion.
En este caso, los votantes potenciales hablan español o inglés, el idioma que se habla debe incluir traducciones y / o subtítulos en el otro idioma, en mi opinión.
This is to assure that all those who pay attention can understand the issues of both sides.
Esto es para asegurar que todos aquellos que presten atención puedan comprender los problemas de ambas partes.

So I stopped.
Not meant as a criticism.
Some languages have a musical flow, unlike English. Or German. Or Russian. Or whatever language Trump and his followers used.
