US Navy sailors have been battling a bed bug infestation aboard an attack submarine

Sailors aboard Seawolf-class submarine USS Connecticut, one of the US Navy's most capable attack submarines, have been battling a bed bug infestation.

Naval Submarine Force Pacific said in a statement that the Navy launched efforts to find and eliminate the difficult-to-kill bed bugs after the problem was first reported last December, explaining that the "physical presence of bed bugs" was found in February.

Sailors told Navy Times, which first reported the infestation, that the problem actually started last March while the submarine was participating in an Arctic training event. Family members of Connecticut sailors told the Kitsap Sun that the bed bug problem has been an issue for about a year.

"People were getting eaten alive in their racks," a petty officer assigned to the submarine told Navy Times. The sailor added that the situation got so bad sailors were sleeping in chairs or on the floor in the mess.

Did Trump visit the sub before he left?

Scourge of humanity, seriously.

FFS, pull out and toss all the mattresses, fumigate the barracks, and give everyone a new mattress that's totally sealed. On a submarine, with the ability to order everyone to do ... whatever ... it shouldn't be THAT hard to clear this up.

Oh, and confiscate and destroy all uniforms and clothing that's been on the boat.

A year they made them suffer? Insane. A submarine has to be the easiest thing to deal with bedbugs since nobody actually lives there. Take out all the bedding, fumigate the shit out of the sub, and bob's your uncle.

I wonder about the problem solving abilities of those in charge here.

Take it out of service, like I said nobody actually lives there, I guess I should have added "permanently"

Of course they sail for extended tours, that's obvious.

The main point is that if they can't even keep a sub shipshape what does that say about the abilities of the higher-ups to solve problems big or small.

Believe it or not, Zyklon B is still available...but the Czechs make it now. Before the fucking Nazis decided to kill humans with it, there were companies all over Germany that would take your bedding, put it in a chamber, and fill it with Zyklon B gas. Three hours later, every insect in it was deader than the last honest Republican and all the gas was removed from your stuff.

They hide in wall trim and bed trim. I had a bad encounter with them when I picked up a safety rail for a dorm loft back in college. I kept getting these itchy bites (look like spider bites) that got worse and worse until I dedicated a few hours of internet research to find out what caused them. Once I suspected bedbugs I went searching for their telltale blood drop poop dots and found them. I found one walking shortly after and finally located the nest in the safety rail between the 2x4s. I sprayed the hell out of them with flying insect killer (pyrethrin) and never got bit again. I carried the dead bugs in a plastic baggy down to entomology for positive ID, which quickly got my room professionally treated by an exterminator. The university did replace my mattress, which wasn't infested, but no college student will turn down a brand new mattress.

Since submarines have to be completely airtight to work, they can pump the boat full of hydrogen cyanide gas, leave it for a couple days, then flush out the gas through ammonia and air out the boat completely.

"Most things in here don't react too well to bullets." Well, the same can be said about those two compounds. And there are so many void spaces that can trap gas, it's a complete non-starter.

They're a big problem in storage units. If you have to use one spray around the place with foam spray and seal everything in plastic bags tightly closed. You can toss the bags when you bring stuff out of storage.
