I received a confusing letter from the IRS in today's mail. It was dated today and told me that a COVID impact payment had been authorized for direct deposit into my account
But the amount stated was much less than I had been expecting. It also said if it hasn't been received in 7 days, I could contact the IRS at the number provided or go to "Where's My Payment" at the IRS website.
A closer look revealed that this letter refers to the PREVIOUS impact payments sent out in December, not to the one expected under the bill signed into law yesterday, and was sent for the purpose of confirming that the amount of that payment is not to be included in income on the 2020 tax returns.
So the letter is in fact completely correct and accurate, but the timing is terrible.
What genius at the IRS decided to send this letter out, written in legalese, at exactly the same time as the new COVID stimulus payments are about to go out and are expected by 85% of the people in the country and have that in mind?
I can only expect this will cause mass confusion and that the IRS will be flooded with what should be unnecessary calls.

(70,407 posts)The amount was the six hundred. which was what it was suppose to be. I just figured the letter went out late.

(4,167 posts)it was about the last stimulus payment, but I can see your point about Americans being confused. Next thing you know people are on twitter crying, right wing media picks the story up, and the narrative is that Biden lied about our checks...but the true story wont be cleaned up once they realize their mistake

(53,963 posts)It's a bit upsetting as I'm one of the ones who they send a check to, which I don't know why since they have my bank info.
My checks always come later than all my friends who get direct deposit.

(17,208 posts)I can't blame DeJoy for this one, though. The letter was dated about a week before I received it, and the $600 had already been deposited back in December. Mailed from Austin, TX, received in Rome, GA.
