AND I will be the first to say, I grew up hearing ALL the racial slurs, against Black people, Asian people, other Latinos like myself, etc... I was not sheltered, and while my parents never used slurs and actively discouraged me from doing so, I was around enough family and peers who encouraged it, that it was normalized.

I grew up around Black people, some White people, Mexicans, and Filipinos and it wasn't always all roses and harmony. What it was however, was an experience in cultural differences, appreciation for other people's experiences, and a lesson to treat people with respect, like how you want to be treated.

I believe it's actually because of something he admitted: he thought the microphone was off.

While diabetes does alter mental acuity (for me it is when I hit 140), it does not create thoughts that are there.

I used to have students who would think they heard me slip and use a swear word, since the language they suspected I used is not in my vocabulary it would have been impossible for me to "slip" and use it.

Same thing here - if your mental acuity is altered because of diabetes, the most it does is make it harder for you to filter the language and thoughts you already possess

I guess the Twinkies finally did him in. Oh wait, that seems so wrong somehow. Er. Now I feel ashamed of myself for that.

Also, and I was not previously aware of this, he was a Democrat. Would not have believed that from his actions.

And he did something else good I read also that showed people can be of two spirits I guess. Very sad to read it, but thanks for giving me the update. Maybe I did read about his death, but just never thought about it much. Seems like he really hated gay people, so damn sad.

For fear of spontaneously grabbing a banjo and singing ‘Lady of Spain’

Absolute bullshit.

Or perhaps a proper glycemic balance helps keep latent racism in check? Check with your doctor...
