. . . Wasn't just being a Black man who was elected president. What really sticks in many people's craws is that he was (is) an extraordinary person.
In my heart of hearts, I try to hold onto the principle that we are all equal in the eyes of God or Whatever, and that no human being is "better" than another. But some folk's entire world view is based on the idea of being some sort of superior something.
No need to bring up Lyndon Johnson's quote here, but Obama twists some White people's stomachs up because he is smarter than them, highly educated, a brilliant speaker and possessed of both class and a relatable, easy manner. Hell, I have some of those qualities to a (much, MUCH) lesser degree and I happily admit that Obama is better than me. I also inspire dislike in family members who hate Obama and think that I am full of myself.
They love Trump, though. And they don't understand that it is really because the man is so lacking in substance that he can't make anyone truly feel inferior--despite his continued need to project a sense of superiority over everyone.
Obviously, if Obama had been both a Black man and an ordinary guy, he would not have gotten where he did. Only rich White men can hope to scale such heights in our society while doing the minimal amount of work involved in being a person.
