(115,615 posts)White supremacists think non-white people are inferior to white people but will tolerate them as long as they "know their place" and don't try to aspire to the same rights and benefits as white people. White nationalists like Nazis don't just think non-white people are inferior; they want to get rid of them altogether. American white nationalists like this douchebag think people who are not like them are not Americans and don't belong in this country at all. The Nazis dealt with that belief by trying to kill all the people they didn't want in their country, and I have no doubt that American neo-Nazis would do the same thing if they could. That's why they're even worse than white supremacists, although the line between them is increasingly blurry.

(54,302 posts)Nazi is an abbreviation for Hitler's NSDAP, the Nationalsozialisten, or National Socialists. "National" in German is pronounced "NAH-tsee-oh-NAHL." They just took the first two syllables. Since the spelling "National" is French, they used a German spelling (the "ts" sound in German is generally spelled as a "z" ). Thus, "NAH-tsee" in German would be spelled Nazi, and therefore "nationalists" is exactly what the original Nazis were.

(115,615 posts)in their names, while in recent times only the Nazis specifically and overtly followed a policy of eliminating certain groups/races/ethnicities from their countries altogether. "Nationalism" as a political movement does not necessarily mean eliminationism; it does mean favoring only one's own national interests, even to the detriment of the rest of the world. American neo-Nazis aren't just nationalists in this latter sense, but, like the original Nazis, really seem to want to get rid of everyone who isn't white, straight, ostensibly Christian, and a fan of The Former Guy.

(21,604 posts)Reagan, as you may know, had an almost child-like need to be regularly entertained with jokes, gags, and yarns - even as president.
That joke was said to be his favorite for whenever an African head of state would visit.

(14,808 posts)Bell Book Says Officials Told Racist Jokes : Reagan Aide Says He Doubts Claim by Ex-Education Secretary
October 21, 1987|Associated Press
WASHINGTON President Reagan's first secretary of education says mid-level Administration officials made racist jokes and other scurrilous remarks during civil rights discussions, but Reagan's chief spokesman said Tuesday he does not believe it.
Terrel H. Bell, in a memoir of Reagan's first term, said the slurs included references to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as "Martin Lucifer Coon" and calling Title IX, a federal law guaranteeing women equal educational opportunity, "the lesbian's bill of rights."
SNIP...
Bell did not identify those who made the racist or scurrilous comments. He could not be reached for further comment.
In his book, he says the jokes about King were made as Reagan was deciding whether to sign or veto a bill establishing King's birthday as a national holiday. He eventually signed it.
Bell said: "I do not mean to imply that these scurrilous remarks were common utterances in the rooms and corridors of the White House and the Old Executive Office Building, but I heard them when issues related to civil rights enforcement weighed heavily on my mind."
Bell added: "It seemed obvious they were said for my benefit, since they often accompanied sardonic references to 'Comrade Bell.' "

(21,604 posts)Thank you for that very informative link, Kid Berwyn.
I remember Meese being described as the most extreme right-winger in Reagan's inner circle - even going so far as to encourage Reagan to invoke Continuity of Government powers to quash the Iran-Cocaine-Contra hearings (Reagan refused).
Meese was desperate, because he was convinced that it would expose the fact that most Contra funding was drug-related (Iran, just 2%), and that everyone from Reagan on down would be prosecuted.
They were lucky.
Though some effort was in fact made by Congress to expose that very fact (the Kerry Subcommittee, most notably), in the end all concerned agreed that such a scandal would damage the presidency and U.S. standing abroad too severely to be pursued.
Repugs always count on that.

(721 posts)A little Mussolini thrown in?
"The Voluntary Militia for National Security (Italian: Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale, MVSN), commonly called the Blackshirts (Italian: Camicie Nere, CCNN, singular: Camicia Nera) or squadristi (singular: squadrista), was originally the paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party, known as the Squadrismo, and after 1923 an all-volunteer militia of the Kingdom of Italy under Fascist rule, similar to the SA in Nazi Germany. Its members were distinguished by their black uniforms (modelled on those of the Arditi, Italy's elite troops of World War I) and their loyalty to Benito Mussolini, the Duce (leader) of Fascism, to whom they swore an oath.
