Reaction was gone by the second day after the shot.

(2,440 posts)I had a sore arm, but that's it. Same with the friend who had his shot the same day, and the sore arm was gone after a day.

(3,307 posts)... but was a bit tired for a day and a half after my first Pfizer shot.

(26,014 posts)Did not feel the shot itself, but within 20 minutes, my arm got sore and the soreness increased with time. There was a burning sensation, like an inflammation would feel, for several hours. Only the upper arm hurt. No other aches or pains anywhere else. Slept a little more than usual, but did not feel any fatigue or loss of energy when awake.
The arm is mostly back to normal now, with only a slight tenderness.
I did have a very runny nose later in the day after the shot and all day the next day, but that might have been allergies since it was warm and windy here recently.

(5,838 posts)Everyone of my friends is ahead of me and will get the second shot this week of Moderna. Waiting to see the reactions. We are all in mid 60s to mid 70s. Only one has had the second shot. His reaction was like a case of the flu.

(26,014 posts)I will prepare ahead of time for my case of flu, with ready made soup, lots of o.j., water, and Tylenol. Antihistamines if necessary.
I am expecting the worst so I can handle whatever.

(23,953 posts)Haven't read those specific links but I'm very interested to see how the vaccine may help people with chronic autoimmune disorders, even if they didn't contract COVID. Interesting stuff. Also very hopeful about how the mRNA technology can lead to vaccinations for other diseases.

(154 posts)1) I got my 2nd Moderna shot on the 11th of March (I'm 67). The shot itself was less painful than the first; within 3 hours my arm hurt worse than the first. I had no reaction except a minor sore arm from the first shot. After the 2nd shot, I had body aches and chills (but no fever) for about 12 hours.. no problem.
2) My partner's mother (90 years old) had NO reaction from either shot, except a minor sore arm.
3) A beekeeper friend (~50 years old), who had COVID 4 months ago, became almost immediately violently ill - throwing up, etc., after the FIRST shot (I don't know if it was Pfizer or Moderna). His infection was rather severe; took a while to regain taste and smell.
4) The wife of a musician friend, front-line medical job (~35 years old), had a temp of 102.3° for 12 hours after the 2nd Moderna shot.
5) A friend in her late 20s, has now been quite sick (36-48 hours) after her FIRST Moderna shot - flu symptoms.
So.. all over the map.

(32,265 posts)but it only lasted a few hours. I felt a little feverish and fatigued Thursday and Friday. I didn't feel terrible, just a little under the weather. Yesterday and today I feel fine.
Best of all is the relief I feel and the couple of days of mild discomfort were a small price to pay after the last year of fearing for my health. I can't wait for the rest of my family and friends to be safe, as well.

(35,176 posts)My husband and I both had a little soreness at the injection site that became a little soreness in the muscle if you moved it or touched it but no different from anything else except tetanus, now tetanus makes me sick and painful. So, all in all it seems like most people are lucky like we were. We are right at 2 weeks post last injection, I think we are probably good. It won't change our behavior but it sure makes us personally feel better about all of it.

(154 posts)The nurse that gave me my 2nd Moderna shot explained it this way:
The older you are, the less "soldiers" you have to fight infection. So older people tend to not have adverse effects from the vaccination. Younger people have very strong immune systems (generally), and may react stronger to the shots.
moonscape
(5,722 posts)with a compromised immune system (on chemo) and while I had no reaction to the 1st Moderna, I had a meaningful one to the second.
First night I had fever and chills so bad I couldnt stop shaking for at least 2 hours before I fell asleep from exhaustion. Devideded to let my body do its thing and take nothing to bring down the fever. Next morning it was 101.5 and gradually went down during the day then stayed around 100.5 for 2 more days. Slight headache and lots of fatigue.
I was thrilled my immune system was active!

(4,405 posts)I wouldn't even say I had a sore arm, just a tender spot and that was gone by the next day. If there were any other reactions, they were so subtle I didn't notice them (my health isn't that good, so I can't say I ever feel "good" for comparison).
We're scheduled for the 2nd Pfizer shot on the 25th. Either way -- side effects or no -- I can't wait to get this finished with.

I wonder if the older you are if the reaction is less because the immune system is less robust.

(2,440 posts)Four are in their 50s, health care workers and educators, and four are over 75. No reactions for any of them beyond a sore arm. One woman said the vaccinator tried to have her hold her arm a certain way after the vaccine, palm up in her lap, to minimize discomfort, but I guess that didn't help. Luckily the pain was gone after a day.

I didn't feel the shot at all until 12 hours later. Now my upper arm feels like I've been hit with a baseball bat. And I could not care less. Any discomfort is worth the psychological relief that the probability of a COVID hospitalization or death has been minimized.

(23,607 posts). . .the very next day, I felt run down, like I had been "hit by a car". However, that feeling was gone the next day (and I didn't take any painkillers)
Also has soreness in the arm for a few days, but that's all gone now.
Just prepping myself for that 2nd shot, now that I have an inkling of what to expect.
However, in the end, it will be worth it.

I had moderna shot #2 yesterday.
Arm is sore, no redness. Systemic symptoms are shaking chills, fever, achy muscles and joints, loss of appetite. My dog, this has sent me sideways.
First shot only sore arm. Then had COVID arm at day 8 post injection. Lasted only about a day.
This second dose has been very unpleasant. 😢
Im 67 as of next Monday.

(484 posts)He had zero reaction to both shots. I had a sore arm for a couple of days with the first, but had a stronger reaction to the second. My arm started hurting almost 36 hours after that second shot, then a red spot started growing until it was the size of a silver dollar with a raised knot underneath - and itchy. By 48 hours after the shot, I was feeling really fatigued, headachy and muscle achy, but never ran a fever. That lasted for a couple of days.
So got the second shot on Friday afternoon, started with symptoms late Saturday night, was symptom free by Tuesday morning. I can live with that...literally.

(33,348 posts)So far, not even a sore arm.
But my knee replacement knee acted up this morning. No Tylenol arthritis for me unless I get fever/body aches from vax. So, I'm elevating and icing the knee.
The knee replacement was almost 4 years ago and I've never experienced anything like this sudden, weird stiffness. I couldn't even walk without a cane until I'd iced it several times. If my shrink husband were alive he'd probably tell me it was psychosomatic because I'd figure if I couldn't walk I wouldn't have to go get the vax. He'd be right!
My next door neighbor said the second Moderna kicked his butt and I've had my butt kicked enough in the last few years. I really hope I don't get the same reaction.

A bad reaction to 2nd shot may actually be a good sign that your immune system is doing its job.

(567 posts)Got shot up with the first shot of the Moderna vaccine Jan 17th and second shot Feb 11th. After first shot had the common "flu shot arm" soreness for day 1,2,3. Day 4,5,6 felt like I had been stomped on all over my body, hurting down to the bottom of my feet. Day 7 stopped eating and kept a bucket nearby. Day 8 shaking on and off with 102 deg fever in evening. Morning of day 9 all better, had taken max Tylenol dose over nite. Since then I have had consultations with four med Drs and have asked all if they had any side effects from the Moderna like what I experienced. All responded yes to some discomfort with "moderate" side effects following the 2nd shot, but nothing like I had with the 1st shot. All but one reported chills with fever lasting one or two days following their 2nd shot only. Was not looking forward to that 2nd shot Feb 11 and was bracing myself for the worst. Everyone had said its after the 2nd shot that the side effects show up the most. Got my 2nd at 3PM, got the chills by 9PM and 102.6 deg fever shortly after. Took the Tylenol and over the next two days had just very low fever and moderately sore arm for another week.

(11,419 posts)I came home and slept for a few hours (which may have been due as much to having an appointment very early in the morning) but otherwise just some soreness in the arm I did have problems sleeping last night, but that's because when the injection person asked which arm I wanted it in I didn't think and picked the side I sleep on. 48+ hours on there are no obvious symptoms or side effects.
