SAN ANTONIO - A local restaurant owner and chef has been the target of hate crimes after he spoke out about Governor Abbott lifting the mask mandate.

Mike Nguyen, the owner and chef at Noodle Tree on UTSA Boulevard, spoke with CNN and San Antonio Current last week about the potential backlash he could face for his comments about Governor Abbott rescinding the mask mandate but felt the message needed to be said.

"I’m on both sides," he said. "I do need my dining room to be open, but I have an illness that could prove fatal if I contracted COVID-19."

Ngyuen was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer that begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system.

Nguyen said, "We are Texans and what we do especially in San Antonio is have each other's backs in times of need. We do the right thing."

Nguyen is in favor of public safety and common sense and now his restaurant has been the target of hate crimes as a direct result of him speaking out.

Vandals spray-painted his restaurant with red spray paint with messages like "Kung Flu", "No mask", "Go Back 2 China" and other hate-filled messages.

The restaurant had to delay their opening on Sunday as a result.

The California native believes Texas officials don't understand the big picture.
