https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2019-08-12/sarah-silverman-cancel-culture-blackfaceOk sarah, here is why you are wrong.
Some may see this as scary, but if you are on the hammer end of a slur, it is not a joke to you. Remember how you said "there would be dietrus" when you justifiably defended that fact harvey Weinstein was being investigated. You were right because, lo and behold, there was a gusher of toxicity that women in YOUR very industry had to work in. Now...what happened, did one of your sacred oxen got gored? Is it scary that people no long give a pass to people who used power over people. Many of these people were using that against YOU Sarah, like your "friend" adam corolla who is now a right wign darling, and how makes jokes about you that would violate the TOS agreement and the FCC.

(32,918 posts)Silverman has dealt (hilariously) with transgressive topics through her career. She, Maher, Burr, and the like are worried what comedy will be like if you can't cross that line any more.
Could this movement towards showing others respect "go too far"? Sure.
Has it? Meh, in a couple cases I guess. I don't have much worry about the poor Confederate monuments.
But, certainly the RW was able to quickly and successfully weaponize Me, Too against Al Franken.

(18,634 posts)They are letting the rare cases when cancel culture went too far or was in error dictate their response. Just because there's a number of silly cases, doesn't mean there is a big problem.

People are canceling with their dollars. I will be damned if I give a penny to a person or an organization that works to curtail my rights.

On edit: It is not my job to give someone offensive the opportunity for redemption. If they decide to change, thats fine. Whatever. Everyone else will have moved on.

Discussed how he found fault with the NFL players kneeling because of his association with the Military, and how his teammates made him see the light on the issue. They forgave him that original stance.

Cause I'm sure it's a drag for edgy comedians, like her, so I understand that sentiment.
If she's saying it's scary at a societal level, I have to disagree.
She also not entirely wrong, IN SOME CASES ... about the 'righteousness porn' thing.
'Being politically correct' can, and has been ... taken to far IN SOME CASES.
I'm primarily concerned with actual discrimination in housing, banking, education, health care, environment, etc. Or violence against people based on things like race, gender identity, orientation, etc.
I really don't feel like I need to police what comedians or even people on TV say.
Highly influential people with a nat'l stage like Tucker are an exception to that.

(12,162 posts)jokes and blackface were once part and parcel of what the public deemed as funny.
Things change. Comedians that do not recognize that society changes arent very good comedians. So much of comedy is observational humor. If they arent able to adapt to the times, then there are others waiting in the wings to move comedy forward.
