It's historical fiction about a celebration of Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali's defeat of Sonny Liston in Miami Beach, Florida in 1964. The party was arranged by Malcolm X and attended by Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke. While the actors playing them didn't look like them they captured their essence.

(99,708 posts)Some of it is true. Malcolm really served them ice cream. Brown and Cooke wanted something stronger.

(59,498 posts)It was interesting bringing more depth to what I knew of each of the four (to be honest, I never heard of Jim Brown). It also was interesting how much it resonates to some of today's issues.

(99,708 posts)A lot of it is based on real life. Malcolm did serve ice cream. The man Jim Brown thought was a friend did use the Nword. Sam Cooke did write a hit song for the Stones. When Cooke said Baldwin Hills is like Beverly Hills with better views he's correct. Baldwin Hills has the highest median income for African Americans in the nation.
When he retired from football at the age of twenty-nine to pursue an acting career it was a huge story. He was also close to Muhammad Ali.
Jim Brown was also the first actor to be in an interracial love scene when he was in 100 Rifles in 1969 with Raquel Welch.

(20,592 posts)It's like, if you could have been a fly on the wall and heard the insiders of the civil rights movement really tell each other their own personal truths. They're no monolith. They all had their own perspectives on how to improve the country.
It's a lovely moment: As it says: One night. No great big huge plot: But you feel like you know the men afterwards, and that's a treasure.
Oh-yeah. And Leslie sings. He's a GOD.
