I thought I might share this morning's email from Bill Penseys, owner of Penseys Spices.
I am sure that Bill would approve of me sharing all the text.

Words matter, especially when you say your words are Gods words. Monday the Pope said that the Catholic Church cannot bless unions of persons of the same sex because God cannot bless sin. This is inexcusable. Unless youve witnessed it firsthand you really cant understand what this message will do to so many people, especially to the young. And especially coming from this Pope, who for so many in the gay community came to symbolize the loving, accepting Catholic father figure they never had. For this Pope to call their very being sin will be too much for too many. Catholic gay teen suicide is a real thing. Monday it just got much worse.
So for today and tomorrow weve expanded our $1 Potato of Love offer to include our entire Official Penzeys Rainbow Spice lineup at just $1 each. And then because the Pope just proved himself to be a Jerk, for today and tomorrow we are offering both our Jerk Pork and Jerk Chicken and Fish Seasonings at half price. These are both really good blends and speak to the awesome wonders and complexities of Jamaican culture. I do look forward to traveling again.
Plus, because what the Pope just did will cause thousands of young gay Catholics to give very serious thought to suicide, we will be giving every one of the dollars we receive from the Rainbow Spices sold and the entire take on Jerk Seasonings to The Trevor Project. They work to, and so very often succeed with, saving the lives that Monday the Pope so carelessly put at such great risk. I know many of you want to support us with every promotion we do, but your spice drawers are overflowing. You could make me most happy by giving anything at all to The Trevor Project. No one should feel alone. Especially this week.
No coupons or codes needed for $1 Rainbow Spices, half-price Jerk Seasonings, or free $3.95 Choose Love Magnet with any purchase. Just visit us at penzeys.com to place your order to be shipped or for touchless pickup outside of one of our stores. And hopefully our sales from this will leave us sending a nice-size check to The Trevor Project. But if you have all the spices you need and more, you directly making a gift and encouraging those you know to do the same would make me even happier. So often those at nonprofits feel so few care. Together us letting them know how much they are appreciated would be just the boost they need this week. Thanks.
And yup, for me this is far too personal. Maybe its the topic for tomorrows email. I dont know, its hard. To lose someone you care about to this game the Catholic Church has always played with the young members of the LGBTQ community they intentionally draw in sticks with you for life. This Pope was supposed to be better. He isnt. Please give to The Trevor Project.
This isnt a gay rights issue, this is a human rights issue. That which you do to the least of us you do to all of us. Its time for all of us to start saying no to cruelty to those outside the majority. It is what Jesus Christ would do. Johnny Cash, too. And no doubt Joe Caslin below as well. I love his art. And its St Patricks Day. Time for Irish stew, no need to look further than his moms recipe. Its very good.
Thanks for absolutely everything. And please give to The Trevor Project. Im guessing your support to them this week means pretty much everything.

Their Chinese cinnamon has a lovely sweetness that, along with a hint of Ceylon makes people fight over my snickerdoodles!

Funny, isn't it, how the 10 Commandments don't even mention it.......
Congratulations to Mr. Penzey and all who speak out about this matter. I wish his products were sold up here in the Great White North!

(1,689 posts)Leviticus Chapter 18 Vs 1
" The Lord said to Moses..."
Leviticus Chapter 20 Vs 1
"The Lord said to Moses..."
So, no, it is not a Roman Church Construct. It is a Jewish construct from a certain point in the Bronze Age that was glommed unto by the Roman Church.
BUT
The phrase "The Lord said to Moses" is, imo, a device designed to add the imprimatur of deity to render actions by the Jewish people of the OT permissible. That being said it becomes more confusing when "Paul" or someone writing as Paul claims that Christians are no longer under the law. Then we see "Paul" condemning homosexuality.
It is important to remember, imo, that religion/social organization uses control of sex to control its believers. It is a form of social control. Those who do not act in the ways sanctioned by powerholders are deemed "the other".
Finally, until the Roman Church turns over every priest, bishop, archbishop and cardinal either accused of abuse or accused of covering up abuse to the secular authorities to investigate they will continue to lack moral authority of any kind. Imo, they are RICO organization. Just because someone becomes a priest does not mean that they are somehow "special".

This is a wonderful company for all the right reasons - especially if you like to cook. Just know that when he says "every dollar goes to The Trevor Project", he means it.

(4,079 posts)I've never even heard of Penzey's, but I might go throw out all my spices and order new ones! Definitely gonna go donate, and probably place a big order.
This guy rocks!
Also, I'm a recovering catholic. (Haven't touched the stuff in almost 30 years.) What the pope said didn't surprise me, but it did disappoint. Like many, I held out hopes that he would rise above some of the doctrinal bullshit, but I knew that was probably impossible.

Jesus was very outspoken about divorce and remarriage as adultery.
Just think of the real money they could make.
