Report Shows Extent of Anti-Asian Violence Over the Past Year

The same day that six women reportedly of Asian descent were killed in a shooting spree that claimed eight lives in Atlanta, the organization Stop AAPI Hate released a report showing just how much racist violence Asian American people face. The organization recorded 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian hate between March 19, 2020 and February 28, 2021 — and that's just a fraction of the overall incidents across the country.

On March 16, a shooter entered three different massage parlors in the Atlanta area and opened fire. Six of the victims are believed to be women of Asian descent. While anti-Asian hate has a long history in the United States, this attack comes at a moment of historic amounts of anti-Asian violence. And, though police have implied the attack might not be racially motivated (which seems to be a statement taking the suspect's words at face value and lacks nuance and complexity around the kinds of oppression AAPI people face), Stop AAPI Hate's report shows that Asian-Americans face danger daily.

According to the report, 68.1% of reported incidents were verbal harassment, 20.5% were shunning (or the purposeful avoidance of Asian Americans), 11.1% were reports of physical violence, 8.5% were civil rights violations, and 6.8% were reports of online harassment. Even more poignant in light of yesterday's attack, the report found that women reported 2.3 times more anti-Asian hate than men.

The report also included details of some of the reports, highlighting the various types of harassment and violence AAPI people face:
