Biden White House Sandbags Staffers, Sidelines Dozens for Pot Use

Dozens of young White House staffers have been suspended, asked to resign or placed in a remote work program due to past marijuana use, frustrating staffers who were pleased by initial indications from the Biden administration that recreational use of cannabis would not be immediately disqualifying for would-be personnel, according to three people familiar with the situation...

I get why they oppose it. I can't handle pot. I get too giddy.

Facts usually are a bit more complicated.

'The rules about past marijuana use and eligibility for the clearance vary, depending on the agency: for the FBI, an applicant can’t have used marijuana in the past three years; at the NSA, it’s only one. The White House, however, largely calls its own shots, and officials at the time told NBC News that as long as past use was “limited” and the candidate wasn’t pursuing a position that required a security clearance, their past use may be excused. . . Some of these dismissals, probations and remote work appointments could have potentially been a result of inconsistencies that came up during the background check process, where a staffer could have, for example, misstated the last time they used marijuana.'

But current misuse of drugs or alcohol gets you thumped. If you lie on your Standard Form 86 and they catch you, it’s really bad.

Marijuana is federally illegal (did I phrase that correctly?) but it is legal in DC. So if the latter is true, why are these people being let go?

Federal government always takes precedence over city.

Recent drug use. Note to kids, if you want to be in a position that requires a secret or top secret clearance, stop the recreational drugs.

Yes, problem drinking will disqualify you too. It’s not that you use drugs, it’s that you might say something that compromised secret information inan altered state.

He’s not judging anyone. The rule is there for a reason. Other stuff like ties to a foreign country or too much debt disqualifies you too

I get it, weed is really no big deal, but here's the thing, these jobs are highly competitive, the ones who were selected beat out hundreds of other equally qualified candidates. And now because of their drug use they won't be able to get security clearance. Biden isn't going to change security protocols like Trump did.

When stuff like this happens, people focus on those losing their jobs, they never think of the people who should have gotten the job, what about those people? So these young people will be replaced by equally qualified candidates who didn't use drugs and can thus get the security clearance needed to do their jobs.

In my professional life, I've had security clearance, I was smart enough to know the types of things that might deny me security clearance before hand. I'm sure some of these staffers' coworkers were smart enough to do the same.
