Trump's 757 hasn't been flown in 4 years and getting it airworthy again is going to take a shitton of cash.
He's currently flying in a 1997 Cessna 750 Citation X which is about $2-3 million. It only seats about 6 people, the lav is quite small, and the interior height is only 5' 7".
https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/19/politics/trump-757-repairs-gold-plated-glory-days/index.html
People who have anywhere near as much money as Trump claims to have do not fly on a 20 yr old Citation X. They fly on a Global Express or a Gulfstream 700 or a Boeing Business Jet.

(5,857 posts)and how easily it could be converted back, 757's are in very short supply. Its the largest single aisle airplane and has the best economics / range for point to point flying. The only thing kinda comparable is the somewhat smaller A321, and the Trump plane will have low cycles / hours.
That said, it still won't be very much compared to purchase price or his supposed net worth.

According to a recent report on CNN, the plane is currently minus an engine, and to fix it would cost a significant sum. However, if the plane was stripped of all its 24 carat gold covering everything not fabric or leather, perhaps that might pay for an engine repair.....

(24,365 posts)And I say that because ......
Planes need fuel and maintenance and have landing fees and ramp fees, NONE of which will continue if the providers get stiffed. We arent talking about a Glass fitter in Atlantic City here, or an architect in New Jersey, we are talking fuel and other costs which can not be put off.
If you own a plane, particularly a large one, and stiff a fuel purveyor, word gets around, and you wont be able to fuel your aircraft for anything other than cash ANYWHERE, your AMEX Platinum card not withstanding.
So heres how I see it;
There are credit lines available, most of the time. He could buy $50,000 worth of Jet-A on credit and the vendor gets paid, fine...no problem. But how does that line of credit get paid?
By another line of credit? Perhaps. And so on and so forth, until someone somewhere is backstopping him, keeping the whole house of cards from collapsing.
And who was that? Who is it that was finally eating those bills, to satisfy the line of credit that kept that fucking thing flying?
I think I know.
BTW, There were stories early in his administration that his boys, Tweedle Dee Trumpy and Tweedle Dum Trumpy used his 757 numerous times, but this is the first I saw that it had been parked up the road from Manhattan, and not at some maintenance facility or at LaGuardia.
So the cash flow keeping his Boeing flying has clearly dried up.
Good. As demtenjeep said above, no one is going to buy it as is, BUT...I suppose he could unload it onto some Saudi dipshit looking to wash a bunch of cash.

(25,392 posts)I flew a Citation-X from Detroit to the Cayman Islands for a magazine article back in the mid-90s. No problem maintaining the high side of Mach 0.91. Atlanta Center had to give us vectors around a Learjet 35 that we were overtaking. I never liked to push a Learjet over about Mach 0.78. A Boeing 737-300, for comparison, plods along at Mach 0.74.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)It will also go twice as far with a helluva lot more room.
Bo Zarts
(25,392 posts)But with that wing sweep and power, the Global 7500/8000 is almost as fast as a Citation-X. Mmo for the 7500/8000 is stated as Mach 0.925, while the Citation-X is Mach 0.935. IMO, a .01 delta in Mach numbers is insignificant. The big differences are price, range, and the fit & finish.
I know someone with a Global Express and a Gulfstream 650, which are used for long international flights (and transcon when the seats are needed). For puddle-jumping within the US, he has two BAe 800s.
BTW: I flew both the Citation X and Gulfstream 5 with test pilots from Cessna and Gulfstream, respectively. Both are certificated to a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet. I took the G-5 from takeoff at Savannah straight to 51,000 feet. Then I did steep turns at FL510! On the Citation-X flight, we were weight restricted and never made FL510. The G-5 had a very wide, comfortable spread between high-speed and low-speed buffet boundries at 51,000 .. the Citation-X had a very narrow "coffin corner."

(36,827 posts)We cruise anywhere from .78 to .82 in the Challenger 6xx series planes I fly. They are slower than some other bizjets, but the clients love them because there's a lot more room in the back. Pilots love them because there's also a lot more room in the front. I met a billionaire at recurrent that owns and operates his own 601. John Travolta and Oprah also had one at one time. You just don't see too many filthy rich people flying in planes you have to bend over to walk inside unless they are frugal and care more about operating costs than convenience and appearance. That definitely doesn't describe Trump. I suspect it isn't going to be that much longer before everything of value Trump owns is going to be repossessed and he will be flying charter or perhaps even scheduled airline.

(50,552 posts)A good businessman who has a 757 and lots of rich friends would have let them use the jet while he was in the White House. He could have charged just enough to cover expenses. The important thing is it would have kept the plane in the air, so that when he was able to use it again it would be in good shape.
A terrible businessman lets a multimillion dollar asset that requires constant use sit and rot.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)He bought it at a time when the airlines were ditching them because they were too expensive to operate. If Trump really had all the billions he claimed, he wouldn't have been buying a 2nd hand obsolete jet with run out engines to begin with.

The reason people choose non-scheduled services is because of time and convenience. Show up whenever you want, bypass security, and leave immediately upon arrival.

(36,827 posts)However, it's also notable that it's not in a hangar. You'd need one big hangar to park that thing inside, but with as much money as he claims to have that wouldn't be a problem.
