As Democrats, we respect and highly regard our former Presidents and Candidates. It's not that we refrain from criticism, but be still think they are relevant and still honor them. It is worth it to us to listen to Carter and Clinton and Kerry and Obama and Clinton. We like and or love them all.
But the GOP has only one living past President before Trump, and he is irrelevant to them. When he comes out and makes a statement, like urging people to get the vaccine, it doesn't move the needle for Republican voters.
People talk about how Republicans aren't the Party of Goldwater anymore. Well, they aren't the Party of Reagan (who was once their Holy Spirit) or the Party of Bush. It is astonishing how a recent two term President is irrelevant to his own Party
They are solely the Party of Trump. A Party with no political agenda save white supremacy, racism and tearing down our Country's institutions.
I am by no means sying any of those men deserve our respect, They did great harm to the Country. But from a GOP perspective, it is a curious thing.

They just did it in a way that, compared to Trump, at least, was remarkably subtle.

(29,250 posts)His giving a speech about states' rights in Neshoba County Mississippi after receiving the nomination in 1980 tells you all you need to know about where he was coming from.

(10,943 posts)... that's a good point. They don't care much for Romney or McCain, either. I didn't and still don't have much admiration for Bush Jr. They also had Nixon and Ford. Reagan was the one they really adored - but after his first year, Reagan wasn't their ideal anymore... signing a new Social Security Tax, MLK Day, Sandra Day O'Conner, compromising with Tip, partying with the Communists... they have not mentioned Reagan as much. Trump is their leader.

Then they'll roll out some other dummy, acting like he/she is the best choice when any discerning person can quickly tell otherwise.

(11,548 posts)Because it's true.
For a party that denies evolution, every single one of their idols has evolved to be exponentially worse. I don't want to see the next one after MF45.

(129,732 posts)As bad as he was in many ways, he didn't go out of his way to be overtly and viciously racist - a characteristic which, to today's GOPers, is a feature rather than a bug.

(15,443 posts)I'd like to see him and Dick Cheney in The Hague for war crimes.

(11,548 posts)Me too! It disgusts me that so many people consider either of them, or Cheney's filthy spawn, to be rehabilitated just because MF45 is worse.

(15,443 posts)When GW Bush left office I wrote this poem for what I'd say to his face if I could:
I'd tell you to go fuck yourself
But that is much too kind
For if you could perform that feat
You'd take pleasure in your behind
I'd like to say eat shit and die
But you deserve much more
You should suffer all the grief and pain
Of your misbegotten war
Though I can never make you think
Or feel, or understand
I'll take solace when you hear your name
Cursed throughout the land
From inside a lonely prison cell
Dark and bare and cold
Where every day you pay for your crimes
Until you're sick, heartbroken, and old
When you finally leave the earth
You fucked over oh so well
If there is a God and afterlife
You're going straight to hell.

(59,877 posts)From 2001 to 2009, the man running things was Dick Cheney, not Bush. If Bush was irrelevant while in office, he sure as hell didn't get any more relevant after he left office.

(3,905 posts)I'm old enough to remember when Dubya could do no wrong among their ranks.
Now, recently he made the declaration that, when he was asked about the election, that it was not in fact rigged, stating the obvious. That should be enough right there to merit ostracization among the rebubs.
Reminds me of the disparaging comments trump made regarding McCain, i.e. not a war hero because he was captured. And the party that claims to support the military veterans didn't seem to mind one bit.

edhopper
(37,173 posts)hate people who want to help or benefit them too. They hate Biden getting everyone the vaccine, they hate Medicaid expansion, even those who desperately need it. They hate making it easier for them to vote. They hate cleaning up their own polluted States. They hate getting a raise from the increase in minimum wage. The list goes on.

(49,756 posts)It really comes out during lunch outings with the office crew. They hate it when I tip well. They hate it when I hand twenty bucks to a homeless person who asks for money. This is a direct quote from one of my esteemed coworkers: Oh thats right. [Iggo] helps. And this gem, one of my all-time favorites: I hate it when people try to make me feel guilty. And I think that last one is really telling. That one guy, at least, thinks I do it to make him look bad. Not because I care. Not because its the right thing to do. Not even that it just needs to be done. Somehow, its all just to make him look bad.

(18,328 posts)W was waaaay worse.
His Iraq War was not only responsible for millions of deaths in Iraq... but it started the upheaval of the Middle East which led to violent uprisings all across the region.
ISIS... the GOP call Obama the "Father of ISIS"... nonsense. W is the father of ISIS.
Egypt... Mubarak was a bad guy BUT he kept the country in order. Instability ensued when he was overthrown and multiple gov'ts have been in power since. Don't forget the Islamic Brotherhood thugs throwing protestors from roof tops.
Libya... same thing. W created the instability.
All over the Middle East.
I'd rank W as a bottom 3 choice in the POTUS rankings. Maybe last place.

(18,328 posts)This is NOT the Bill Kristol/Steve Schmidt GOP.
They were pro-war, pro-nation building, free market and low tax loving neocons.
This new GOP is a blend of populists, racists, angry white folks who got left behind, evangelicals and the envious.
