“A federal appeals court judge issued an extraordinary opinion Friday attacking partisan bias in the news media, lamenting the treatment of conservatives in American society and calling for the Supreme Court to overturn a landmark legal precedent that protects news outlets from lawsuits over reports about public figures,” Politico reports.

“D.C. Circuit Senior Judge Laurence Silberman’s diatribe, contained in his dissent in a libel case, amounted to a withering, frontal assault on the 1964 Supreme Court decision that set the framework for modern defamation law — New York Times v. Sullivan.”

Silberman is also a friend of Justice Clarence Thomas and in 1989 encouraged a young and then-reluctant Thomas to accept a federal judgeship on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.[5]

Silberman was on the short list of potential nominees to the Supreme Court on three separate occasions in 1987, 1990, and 1991.[12] However, after the rejection of Robert Bork, with whom Silberman had served on the District of Columbia Circuit, he was always regarded as controversial.[13] Moreover, unlike fellow conservatives Pasco Bowman II and John Clifford Wallace, Silberman even drew some opposition from Republican senators,[14] possibly because he was known for an explosive temper[15] and “given to shouting in court”.[16]

Silberman was a mentor to David Brock (who later founded Media Matters) back when Brock was a conservative smear artist, writing books like The Real Anita Hill and working on "The Arkansas Project" to dig up anything that could be used against Bill & Hillary Clinton.

Silberman is also one of the judges who overturned Oliver North's conviction.
