Lancet report faults Trump for 'avoidable' coronavirus deaths

BY PETER SULLIVAN
The Hill - 02/11/21

A report in the British medical journal The Lancet blames former President Trump for an error-filled response to the coronavirus pandemic that it says contributed to 40 percent more deaths compared to other wealthy countries.

The report from the Lancet Commission on Public Policy and Health in the Trump Era points to the more than 450,000 deaths in the U.S. from the coronavirus and says about 40 percent of them “could have been averted” if the U.S. death rate matched that from Group of Seven members Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The 33 doctors and other experts on the commission also make broader critiques, ranging from racism to climate change. They argue that in 2018, 461,000 fewer Americans would have died in the U.S. had the same life expectancy as the other G-7 countries.

On February 7, (2020) as he told the public that the virus was nothing to worry about, Trump said to Woodward: "It goes through the air. That's always tougher than the touch. You don't have to touch things. Right? But the air, you just breathe the air and that's how it's passed. And so that's a very tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's also more deadly than even your strenuous flus."

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS

With fear about the novel coronavirus spreading as fast as the disease itself, the Trump administration’s mismanaged handling of the pandemic led to mistrust and anger and put hundreds of thousands of lives at risk. American Oversight is investigating the government’s response to the crisis, from its misleading public statements and lack of federal assistance to states, to testing delays and industry influence.

I read Madeleine Albright’s “Fascism: A Warning” She makes the case that the fascists don’t think like democrats. In their minds, they feel it’s our duty as citizens to die for the state — them. Madame Secretary’s work examines history, but calls out the current players by name.

This Is the Most Criminal Dereliction of Duty in the History of the American Presidency

The Washington Post offers a staggering vista of lies and blundering—and blundering lies—that is the sad history of the Trump administration response to the pandemic.

By Charles P. Pierce
Dec 21, 2020

“Spirit! are they yours?” Scrooge could say no more.

“They are Man’s,” said the Spirit, looking down upon them. “And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased."

—A Christmas Carol, Stave III

The Ghost of Grifters Not Yet Past was everywhere over the weekend. In the New York Times, we read about how the Ghost had arranged for a meeting of the political Chronic Ward in the White House. In the Washington Post, we read about how the Ghost had visited his feral children, Ignorance and Want, upon the land by giving them national political leaders who couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel, and, worse, had no desire to learn how, even in the midst of the greatest public health crisis in a century.

While the Times's account of the Mad Hatter's seditious tea party is the flashier story, it is the Post's deep spelunking into the administration*'s brutal (and quite deliberate) mishandling of the pandemic that is more likely to resound in historical memory as the most criminal dereliction of duty in the history of the American presidency. By comparison, Herbert Hoover at the onset of the Great Depression and James Buchanan as the nation slid toward the Civil War were positive pikers in their disregard for the office they held and the country they were chosen to lead.

The catastrophe began with Trump’s initial refusal to take seriously the threat of a once-in-a-century pandemic. But, as officials detailed, it has been compounded over time by a host of damaging presidential traits — his skepticism of science, impatience with health restrictions, prioritization of personal politics over public safety, undisciplined communications, chaotic management style, indulgence of conspiracies, proclivity toward magical thinking, allowance of turf wars and flagrant disregard for the well-being of those around him...

Trump's chief of staff could face scrutiny in Georgia criminal probe

By Linda So
March 19, 2021

(Reuters) - In late December, as then-U.S. President Donald Trump falsely alleged that rampant voter fraud caused his Georgia election loss, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows made an unexpected visit to an Atlanta suburb, hoping to observe an audit of thousands of voter signatures.

The Georgia secretary of state’s office said it had just 45 minutes notice of Meadows’ arrival in Cobb County, and it barred him from the room where state investigators were examining the absentee ballot signatures. A day earlier, Trump had publicly complained that the audit was moving too slowly after making baseless claims that Georgia’s signature verification system is rife with fraud.

Snip...

Meadows also spoke with the secretary of state’s chief investigator, Frances Watson, who was conducting the audit of about 15,000 signatures along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Meadows gathered contact information from both Watson and Fuchs, including their cell phone numbers.

Trump called Watson the next day, urging her to find the “dishonesty” that he claimed, without evidence, had cost him the election.

“When the right answer comes out, you’ll be praised,” Trump told Watson, according to audio of the call reviewed by Reuters and first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Wussten Sie, dass er ein Keimfeind ist?

Remember how the heinous anus kicked Mick Mulvaney out of the room when the then-chief of stuff coughed during a TV interview with George Stephanopoulos?

“Let’s do that over, he’s coughing in the middle of my answer,” said Trump, who then paused to glare in the direction of the offender, who Stephanopoulos identified as “your chief of staff.”

Dumpler has a problem with germs...

Trump is such a germaphobe that aides aren't allowed to cough in his presence and visitors must wash their hands before entering the Oval Office, report says

Tom Porter
Business Insider, Jul 8, 2019, 6:14 AM

Aides to President Trump have told Politico that he hates it when staff cough or sneeze in his presence because of his longstanding germaphobia.

Trump also reportedly asks visitors to wash their hands in a bathroom off the Oval Office, and uses hand sanitizer after shaking hands at campaign events.

In an interview, Trump described shaking hands as "barbaric" because it spreads germs.

In June, Trump ordered acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney from his office after he coughed during a TV interview.

So, as long as germs don’t get him, all is fine and dandy. No wonder he couldn’t give two cents when warned about COVID-19 in January! He knows how to protect himself.

Guy could’ve ordered America’s industrial might to create the things needed to fight the disease, but no.

Still Confused About Masks? Here’s the Science Behind How Face Masks Prevent Coronavirus

By Nina Bai
UCSF, June 26, 2020

Excerpt...

How many people need to wear masks to reduce community transmission?

“What you want is 100 percent of people to wear masks, but you’ll settle for 80 percent,” said Rutherford. In one simulation, researchers predicted that 80 percent of the population wearing masks would do more to reduce COVID-19 spread than a strict lockdown.

The latest forecast from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation suggests that 33,000 deaths could be avoided by October 1 if 95 percent of people wore masks in public.

Even if you live in a community where few people wear masks, you would still reduce your own chances of catching the virus by wearing one, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford.

It may seem sideshow, but Big Money is behind the Big Lie:

“The Mercers laid the groundwork for the Trump revolution," Bannon told The New Yorker in 2017. "Irrefutably, when you look at donors during the past four years, they have had the single biggest impact of anybody, including the Kochs." Steve Schmidt, a former Republican strategist and co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, sees it differently. Rebekah Mercer, he said in an interview with Salon, is the "chief financier or one of the chief financiers of the fascist movement, and that's what it is."

https://www.salon.com/2021/02/04/how-one-billionaire-family-bankrolled-election-lies-white-nationalism--and-the-capitol-riot/

The antidote — Truth.

How do we counter “the big lie?” That can only be done by “the big truth,” that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and that Donald Trump lost, endlessly repeated by as many sources as possible. Most Republican leaders in Congress have stated publicly that Biden won. Almost all Republican members of Congress and all but a small handful of Trump loyalists admit privately that Biden won. Now if they would only say that publicly.

Important stuff that’s becoming lost to history...

Time of Useful Consciousness explains monetized mass propaganda and its impact - now more than a century in action...

Alex Carey said that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. Carey’s unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era.
