It was interesting, everything was fine and I was going about my daily chores. I had to take a ride into Philadelphia from here which is about an hour and was completely uneventful. I was at my office doing a few things and all of a sudden it was like a wave broke over me. I dont get sick often, perhaps once every five years or less, but I suddenly had terrible lassitude and fever which was almost 100°. I took a couple of aspirin which works best for me personally, and the fever sort of broke. After I did, I got back in my car drove back home and had absolutely no appetite or strength. I watched a little TV, toddled off to bed at about 830 and awakened at 12:30 with fever and the shakes. I took two more aspirin, went back to bed, felt the fever break and finally fell asleep around 3 oclock.
I woke up at about 8:30 feeling fine, perfect in fact. I am virtually certain that it was from the vaccination because when I get a 24 hour flu bug I get many other symptoms which I did not have to endure this time. Im just posting this so People know that the reaction to the vaccine may be highly variable, since I receive mine last Monday, and not to worry.

Happy for sure as my gal had her 1st Pfizer shot a few days before me and ouch! With underlying conditions and having survived COVID-19 last March, 2020, perhaps these are the reasons she's still hurting. Injection site was hot to the touch for 3 days but it's now subsided. Still lethargic but getting better slowly.
Odd how different our symptoms (or no symptoms for me) were.

(102,122 posts)experience, especially on the pre-screening (eligibility side). I think Colorado is doing a good job with that, but...
I am encouraging EVERYONE I vaccinate (and every clinic event I've worked has provided the handout) to participate in
VSAFE (the CDC tracking system for after-vaccine issues, whether none at all, minor, or severe). It is damned simple. They will send you a text which takes 20 seconds at most to reply every day for the first week and then weekly thereafter. Same drill for second dose.
Here is where you sign up, in case you are not aware. Please do so.
https://vsafe.cdc.gov/en/
For those who think it is not so important... This massive source of data will speed to the approval of these vaccines on a regular review--nonemergent. By doing so, the military (where approx 30% are refusing) to require the vaccine for all active duty and this is critical. They cannot require an emergency-approved vaccine to be administered but once it is fully approved, they can.
I hope your second dose goes a bit better for you. That said, you know you are having a robust immune response and there is something reassuring to that.

Better today, just weird

(22,665 posts)Similar to yours, but only to 25% of the degree, by the sounds of it. I'd call my shoulder (upper elbow to shoulder) tender, like if I'd run into the wall. Onset was 4 hours after the injection. I wouldn't sleep on it, of course, but mild tenderness. In fact, I had to do ladder work right after and the next day, arms over my head. No big deal, just tender.
17 hours the tenderness began to wane, itch in fact, turning to swampiness for most of the day and insomniatic into the night. Less than 48 hours after injection, 90% of the tenderness went away.
I think the first shot was a caffeine energy drink.

(2,590 posts)I got my second Moderna vacc on Friday at 3:30. I was fine the rest of the afternoon and all evening, with the expected sore arm, but woke up around 4 a.m. needing to go to the bathroom, and was so weak, I had to hold onto the bed to brace and not fall. Made it back to bed and woke still feeling pretty rough. No energy, low grade chills and a low grade fever. I used a couple of acetaminophen and started feeling a little better, but I didn't want to do anything the rest of the day except read and nap. Around 3ish that afternoon, I started feeling feverish, took my temp and it was 100.6. Took a couple more acetaminophen tabs and at about 4:30, the fever vanished and for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening I felt fine. It was as if the effects vanished about 24 hours after the vaccination. Today I feel fine. Overnight I noticed that I had a bit of congestion in the lungs, but nothing serious (and, frankly, that may due to my allergies-asthma because the pollen count is so high here in Dallas).
While I didn't welcome feeling rough for most of a day, I did welcome the reaction to the vaccine. I know that the worse the symptoms experienced in the aftermath of the second vaccine (and the single injection J&J) means that the immune system recognized and was prepared to fight the Covid-19 virus. Now I just have to wait a couple of weeks in order to begin carefully getting back into a more "normal" life. Just in time to be able to hit some of the garden supply and nurseries in the area, and our ravaged landscape needs it. But that's another story.

(111,141 posts)since it takes about that long for your body to gin up a big immune response to a large viral load. It's why you don't get sick immediately after some clod coughs in your face.
For future reference, fevers below 102F are considered beneficial and aren't treated. Antipyretics are given when they're accompanied by body aches.

Warpy
(111,141 posts)Fever is how your body starts making the climate inhospitable, weakening the pathogen, and alerting every part of the immune system that there is a problem.
Remember, feeling like crap isn't due to the infection, it's due to your body's response to it. The more you can hold off on popping that pill, the better.

(658 posts)It'll be 3 weeks on Tuesday. Can't wait to get the 2nd one over with so I can stop avoiding maskless people.
It did affect me a little bit. I had chills and was fatigued. I work as an electrician, which is a fairly physical job. Up and down ladders, demolition, etc... I think I went back to work too soon. I was fatigued for almost a week, and my muscles hurt throughout that period of time.
My wife has had both of her Moderna shots. The first had no affect. The 2nd one did though. She had severe chills and an overall weak and ill feeling for about 36 hours or so. She slept quite a bit during that period.
I'm 56, she's 55. Her parents are in their 80's. They have both taken both Moderna shots. Neither of them had any ill affects.
It's strange how it's affecting different people differently. I'm wondering if it might have to do with exposure. I'm wondering if I might have been infected at some point which triggered my immune system to go into overdrive once the mrna cells were introduced. I'm not a scientist, so I'm left guessing about it, but it is a curiosity.

(640 posts)But a really small percentage of people actually show up with COVID after the vaccine and you are correct. That's the reason that everyone should be signing up on the CDC website that is listed in one of the comments so side effects can be tracked.
Edit to add: It is post #21 that gives you the detailed information for sign-up.
wnylib
(21,340 posts)cannot give you covid. They do not have the covid virus in them. They only have a protein "blueprint" to tell the immune system what to watch for and how to prepare for and react to it.
Anyone who says they actually got covid from the vaccine is misinformed, maybe mistaking the vaccine reaction for the actual illness.
It is possible to get covid after being vaccinated if you are exposed to the virus before the second shot, or before the second shot has had time to build up enough antibody protection, but it does not come from the shot itself.

Today I felt like I had flu symptoms, slight chills and aches, but NO FEVER and no headache. She explained it by saying it's the immune system fighting something strange in the body and creating antibodies, which is good (probably more technical/medical than that, but...)

(2,012 posts)for many years and have never had any problem with any shots though they told me the second vaccination was more likely to have some side effects. I had no problems. But I did have a shock when I got a shingles shot two months before the covid 19 vaccination and had lots of pain and itching, bad rash and bruising which lasted for two months. My doctor has many elderly patients and apologized as she knew this is not uncommon. I think everyone should be given good information as shingles shots (now you have to have two) are very important because shingles is a severe disease that even young people can get.

(6,791 posts)I've had a couple of allergy-triggered fevers over 102°. The first one I treated and broke with a cold-water whole-body soak. I couldn't do that with the second one because I was in the hospital post-surgery at the time ... they were making me crazy taking blood samples looking for high white cell count (it was in fact low - so of course I was making them crazy too, quite unintentionally.) I broke that one with - well, not actually Gatorade, but the equivalent with all-natural ingredients. It took a couple of quarts and I had to have it smuggled in by family, but the fever broke - I felt it break - in the early morning hours. I was due and ready for release, and they didn't want to let me out because they didn't understand it, but thank God I had had the first incident, because my prior experience of an allergic fever was what got me out.
I use aspirin and other NSAIDs for headache, muscle, and joint pain. It frankly would not occur to me to use them for a fever.

(6,791 posts)that is what the AI in NSAID stands for - anti-inflammatory.
But when I know I'm having an allergic fever, I'm not going to put additional OTC drugs, and even less the fillers in OTC drugs (i.e., more allergens and potential allergens), into my body if I can avoid it.
And it does have to be over 101° at least, and probably over 102°, to even get my attention.

(138 posts)..about the use of aspirin. I have been told by multiple sources that an anti-inflammatory like aspirin or ibuprofen is a no-no for this. Tylenol is okay (but do NOT drink anything alcoholic if you do take Tylenol - it can cause acute liver damage). By taking an anti-inflammatory drug you are countering the vaccination effect.
..but of course, this is easy for me to say; when I got my 2nd Moderna shot on 3/11, I merely had minor body aches and chills (but no fever) for about 24 hours.
PCIntern
(25,480 posts)Is that they have convinced an entire nation that aspirin is more dangerous than heroin. There are numerous articles extolling the virtues of Tylenol and excoriating aspirins use, but in fact Tylenol is less effective in many circumstances and carries its own potential dangers.
