Covid cases are rising in 21 states as health officials warn against reopening too quickly

Even as the pace of vaccinations accelerates in the U.S., Covid-19 cases are increasing in 21 states and highly infectious variants are spreading as governors relax restrictions on businesses like restaurants, bars and gyms.

Public health officials warn that while roughly 2.5 million people nationwide are receiving shots every day, infection levels have plateaued this month and some states have failed to reduce the number of daily cases.

The 7-day moving average of new infections plateaued at 54,666 as of Friday after declining for weeks, according to a CNBC analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

...

Infections are rising in the following states: Alabama; Connecticut; Hawaii; Idaho; Illinois; Maine; Maryland; Massachusetts; Michigan; Minnesota; Missouri; Montana; New Hampshire; New Jersey; New York; North Dakota; Pennsylvania; Rhode Island; Virginia; Washington; and West Virginia.

Since I'd been spot checking data, it didn't surprise me at all.

They have to take some of the steam out of the pressure cooker.

That's my theory as to why. It seems a tad premature...

All those college kids piling up in one place then spreading back out across the country. I’m sure it’ll be fine, right?

Just had a gentle conversation with a friend who has repeatedly been posting pitures from his dining out adventures. He recently posted about dining at a local restaurant, filled to the current capacity, and being glad that he wasn't part of a nearby table that was being very loud and boistrous because he thought that would be risky.

I responded that I'm not dining out anywhere yet, since I can't eat with a mask on and our county is still red. Trying to make the point without being too much of a scold. (He has recently diagnosed heart problems, for one thing, so he is definitely at risk.)

His response: his risk was virtually nil because he was sitting there at a table for one (for an extended period of time), in a relatively isolated spot.

So I linked to an infectious disease poster identifying eating in a restaurant as being in the highest risk category of activities, and pointed out that the HVAC could either have carried the laughing group's disease to him for more than 20' - or, if it was stagnant, that he could have been sitting in the undispersed aerosolized matter from the prior diner. I encouraged him to hold on for another month, since he will have his first dose of the vaccine on Thursday.

4 out of 5 members of the family of a student of mine (who had been scheduled for brain surgery in about 2 weeks) have now been diagnosed with COVID. Her surgery is now delayed for about 8 weeks (assuming she survives COVID - she has severe asthma). They don't know where it came from because the 1st diagnosed didn't even go to school . . . but a sibling does . . . and they have traveled during the pandemic (making a road trip out of seeking a second medical opinion, stopping off in Vegas). Not to mention that this is the second round of COVID in the family (the 5th had it earlier . . . that one was blamed on the ex-spouse's lack of care).

I don't get it. COVID can occasionally sneak through boundaries, despite extreme caution. But every person I know of who has gotten it despite insisting they were taking precautions, admitted that they (or a family member) were eating in restaurants or visiting friends indoors, or going down to the mailbox in a communal building unmasked, or . . .
