Customs and Border Protection has more than 5,000 unaccompanied children in custody

Customs and Border Protection has more than 5,000 unaccompanied children in its custody, up from less than 4,500 just days ago, according to agency documents reviewed by CNN.

Why it matters: The number of unaccompanied children crossing the border is expected to grow exponentially through this spring, which is likely to further strain the resources needed to shelter the children, setting up a crisis for the Biden administration.

By the numbers: A CBP staffer told top administration officials last month that the agency is projecting a peak of 13,000 unaccompanied children crossing the border in May, Axios' Stef Kight reports.

President Biden was also briefed in March on the need for 20,000 beds to shelter the expected increase in child migrants.

... good to keep accepting children without parents when the other countries aren't.

Someone should tell these guys to start the process in their country and support that there.

There's something just not correct about this scene

For many months going forward.

We must speed up the placement of these kids with their families/relatives, even as Joe devises a plan to (try) to keep them from trying to get here in the first place

and for four years depraved trumpists cruelly pushed them back to survive as they could, or not. They're 1000 times better off now, on the U.S. side of the border they struggled so hard to get to and in our care. Congrats and welcome to every one of them. Next step better still.

I keep hearing that we have problems...but what are the solutions? Who do we need to call if we want to foster these children or sponsor a family?

There are border centers/asylum ports of entry on the northern border, and refugee processing centers at most major coastal airports like LAX, LaGuardia, OHare etc.

Why must these kids be kept down there?

Surely they could be spread across the country to process?

I have to believe that would facilitate reunification and getting these kids out of HHS custody.

Bring the child to Chicago and any relatives from every surrounding state can (and will) get there to identify and reunite. Same with the east or west coasts. Keeping them in Texas is a prohibitively expensive, and long, journey however for most

Mayorkas said the Border policies were gutted by the last regime, and funds that were for 3 Central America countries were stopped. He said the asylum policy could have implemented from their home countries that the migrants could have done from their own countries. Also Honduras suffered 2 hurricanes and still unlivable.

Also those children who are migrating are carrying contact numbers of relatives in the US for officials to contact.

The QOP are going to be pushing this crap that the Biden administration should have never gutted idiot boys policies, WHAT policies??? to separate children from their mothers???? and put people in cages???? Again the Miller policies stripped and gutted the policies.
