Hungarian is a gender neutral language, it has no gendered pronouns, so Google Translate automatically chooses the gender for you. Here is how everyday sexism is consistently encoded in 2021. Fuck you, Google.

It could default to “they” but the context is keying on the sex. Hungarian is a tough language. There are so many better examples and problems of sexism to focus on. Is this a priority? Equal pay would be my priority.

I have used Google translate app for the last 4 years mostly in China and in Hungary. Tap on the camera and see it translated Chinese symbols into English characters is awesome.

There is a shield that shows up when it’s verified.

That being said this is likely showing the sexism of the user base that has entered the translations and has little to do with Google.

The "consistently encoded" implies a human coded this gender bias. That's just not true.

This is the result of machine learning (fancy neural networks). At most you can accuse google of accurately reflecting the bias in the input data they fed to the translation engine.

Automatic translation is very much subject to the "garbage in / garbage out" rule of computer science.

And machine translation is surprisingly good within its limits. Even so, I'll routinely feed its translation back again to see if the translation of the translation even remotely matches what I started with.
