(14,559 posts)Galveston Tx was raised up to 17 feet in 1903. The whole city! They did it to keep the city viable and the Port of Galveston open after the hurricane of 1900.
All except one building, the Moody Mansion. W.L Moody wanted nothing of it so the first floor became a basement.
Amazing what we can do when we put our minds to it!
