Friends have told me to use "enslaved people," instead of "slave." Slave makes it sound as if that's an aspect of the person.

There were at the start of Lincolns term free Whites, free Blacks and Black slaves (terms used at the time). The Black Slaves were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Legally, theyre were the same as the free Blacks, but from a historical standpoint, they were a different group.
