I have no problem with anyone believing whatever they choose to believe. I definitely have my own beliefs, but those are my private business. But, I sure as hell have a MAJOR problem with any arrogant ass who insists that HIS beliefs allow him to deny services---even life-saving services---to someone because they don't approve of their lifestyle or their race or even THEIR religion! And, let me wade a little further into this fetid quagmire: IMHO, 99% of those who seek to justify their mean assholery because of their "religious beliefs" are lying sonsabitches! They don't HAVE any recognizable religious beliefs except when they need a shield for their mean-spirited bigotry.
I may start selling tee shirts.

(9,090 posts)that theory is kind of a unified theory of thought and behavior suggesting humans have been learning sex with the wrong hand. the differences that made go back to our earliest ancestors and were selected for in times of conflict and scarcity and was the reason we're 90% right handed - right hand connected to left brain. it could be selected for and inherited by human populations that preferred particular symptoms. it started getting really bad a few thousand years ago.
major symptoms of sex on the wrong brain, or sowb, include greed and the Certainty Deficit Disorder (need for certainty/finality/closure to satisfy
'logic'?) and major religions were mechanisms for creating certainty and increasing sexual repression/frustration - to increase periods of masturbation associated with guilt, punishment, violence, etc
sowb theory predicted an increase in extremism due to pandemic increase in masturbation. it also suggests killing might be a way of satisfying the irrational need for certainty

(3,192 posts)that left-handers are more connected to the right brain -- which, of course, means that southpaws are the only people who are in their right minds. And I am in complete agreement, my own left handedness playing no rile in my objective determination. (Barrack Obama was a southpaw, btw. Reagan was, but converted to the dark side at an early age.)

(9,090 posts)left handers, while having less sowb, were more adaptable to a right handed world. not sure what that means but handedness expert chris mcmanus charts the millions of years of decreasing left handedness from about 50-50 to nearly 0 (discrimination? maybe those left handers stood out too much?), then it rebounded to 10%.

(3,457 posts)It's nowhere near as offensive (I don't find it offensive at all) as the cruel hypocrisy you described. And you only hit upon one tiny bit of the tip of the iceberg with regards to religious hypocrisy in this country.
My personal belief system is very simple. I don't care where you are from (we're all from Earth), I don't care what language you speak, I don't care what color your skin is, I don't care who your favorite sports teams are (unless it's Alabama - I hate you)(not really), I don't care if you're rich, poor, short, tall, fat or thin. My belief is that there are only two kinds of people on this planet; those that are assholes and those that are not assholes.
That's why I come here to DU (among a few others). This is a place where those that are not assholes can come and reliably find out who the assholes are.

Almost all of the 12 major world religions believe in inclusion, except for women. In all of them, women are still spiritual inferiors in most religions. Which is why Jesus didn't belong to any religion after he left Judaism.
I can't even get as outraged as you about it, but as a woman, I think I understand where you're coming from.

A religion is a cult taken to extremes.
So, not the same.
I'm religious.
But my religion forbids me to mention that I am, or to use it to hit other people over the head with.
Bullying, browbeating and denigrating others is definitely NOT part of any religion, as far as I know.
Religious or not, we can all recognize the Devil, and those amongst up who follow him. Right?

(5,370 posts)While I was studying criminology we had a section on cults, and there are weight loss cults, financial cults, "success" cults. There was a cult for a while there in Arizona which targeted widows living far from family; they'd be so grateful for the attention they'd let the cult infiltrate in ways they might not have in a different situation.
The instructor also said corporations engage in cult-like behavior in some situations. I took that with a grain of salt. Then I heard friends complain what was going on at work, and I thought, hmmm ...

(3,511 posts)I dont identify as Christian, and I was thankfully brought up in an agnostic, secular family. But I have read the majority of the Bible, including most of the New Testament, and I dont recognize anything these people espouse as coming from that source. In my opinion, the Mafia, Latin American drug cartels, African warlords, ISIS, the Taliban, and the American Christian Right, are all exactly the same thing. Unconscious, unenlightened, self-entitling patriarchy. They have no belief, no political philosophy. They just operate from the reptilian brain stem, and think they possess the obvious unadulterated Truth.

For they are not all the same, therefore, some will look at others as wrong. And there it begins.

(2,574 posts)Awaits Governor's Signature
A bill delivered to the desk of Republican Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson on Monday would allow medical professionals to refuse service to LGBTQ people.
SB 289, the Medical Ethics and Diversity Act, would allow doctors and other health care workers to deny any non-emergency services based on religious, moral or ethical objections. The bill was passed by the Arkansas state legislature last week. Health care organizations would be banned from taking any disciplinary actions against workers who refuse services based on "conscience" under the law.
It is not clear whether Hutchinson supports the bill. The governor opposed a similar bill in 2017, but said last month that the recent proposal addresses "an important concern by the public and medical community," according to the Associated Press. The bill is one of several controversial proposals recently delivered to Hutchinson. Another proposal sent to the governor on Monday would ban transgender women and girls, but not men and boys, from participating in school sports in accordance with their gender identities.
The text of SB289 does not single out LGBTQ people, and its broad scope could have major implications for all Arkansas residents. For instance, residents could be refused medication from pharmacists that have personal conscience-based objections to any prescription. Psychologists and therapists would also be covered by the law and could refuse to treat anyone that does not meet their personal religious or moral standards. The bill would also allow academics the choice to refuse publishing the results of studies if the facts gathered are in conflict with their beliefs.

A gay woman I know said, "If you think homosexuality is sinful, don't engage in homosexual acts." Perfect. That's the way to do it. My beliefs are for me, not for you.
The Colorado shooter was taken to a hospital after he was apprehended; I'm sure the doctors and nurses were revolted by his acts, which went against any sane person's moral code yet it was their job to treat him and I'm sure they did.
Since the nation has become so diverse we need to operate on a secular basis so as to protect everyone's belief, from Christian to Wiccan to non-believer.

That is why we have separation of church and state in the US. Not freedom of religion but separation of church and state.
