(3,722 posts)if you have an intruder in your home, you're going to use a hand gun for defense. Nobody sleeps with an AR-15 under their pillow.

(1,521 posts)True that semi-auto weapons are legal -- pistols, rifles, shotguns. In fact, I own a few -- .45 and .40 cal pistols, Remington 1100 shotgun. My rifles all are bolt-action with 4 or 5 round magazines.
While the AR-15 is marketed as a "modern sporting rifle," anyone who needs 10 or 20 rounds for deer hunting should take up another hobby. My Remington and Weatherby rifles have 4- and 5-round magazines. I've never needed more than 2 for deer, elk, and moose. Besides, using the AR-15 most popular round-- 5.56 mm -- is not legal for hunting in most states and heavily restricted in others.
I carried the original AR-15 -- the M-16 -- during three tours in a place called "Viet Nam." Don't own one now, have no use for it. There need to be bans on certain types of weapons and magazine capacity. Period.

(4,522 posts)I think there's also a psychological "image" of the AR type weapons. Yes, I know that semi-auto is semi-auto, etc.
But it seems that ARs are marketed at the "go to war" gun that is "best" if you need to "go to battle". '
While there may be a few "sport enthusiasts" - its just not the target audience.
The target audience is people who (mainly) live in a fear based world, where the "need' something to keep them safe. Or go on a killing spree. Or both. Look at all the cosplay stuff (vests, belts, gear, etc) that the proud boys type, etc all seem to buy with their ARs. That isn't for "deer hunting" or "target shooting". Its buying into a fear based tough guy (sometimes girls but mainly guys).
So it's no wonder that AR "image" is what sells when your local crackpot, white supremacist, right wing religious (?) wacko goes off the deep end. And I think that IS a big deal.
It doesn't mean the AR isnt similar in capability to no AR semi-autos, but the mentality/image/psychology is different.

(36,291 posts)They can fire anything from pistol cartridges up to shotgun shells and high power center fire rounds.
The versatility of the gun is what will make it impossible to ban unless one bans all semi-auto rifles.

(36,291 posts)which states prohibit it?
In parts of lower Michigan, the guns you have would be illegal to use for hunting as they are considered too powerful.
Also, one can easily purchase 5 round mags for AR-15 style rifles.
AR-15 style rifles can fire anything from .22 cal to shotgun shells. Your can buy one that fires the same rounds your rifles do.
And since you can buy an AR that fires the same rounds as you own rifles do and you can purchase 5 round mags for the AR, what is your actual issue with the AR style rifle then?

(1,521 posts)This observation appears in Ian Fleming's book "Goldfinger":
Mr Bond, they have a saying in Chicago: 'Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action'.
While there is some question as to where Ian Fleming picked up this quote, there is no question that the observation is accurate.
So -- now the question is: "Who is the enemy?" I think we all know the answer to that.

(11,627 posts)First they get your AR 15 automatic weapon that everyone uses for mass shootings pretty soon they want your deer hunting rifle...
Sort of like how they started out making us drive 55 and wear seat belts and now the speed limits are all 20 and people have to wrap themselves in bubble wrap... no way to control that sort of overreach and make the laws specific to the problems I suppose...

Let's just call it what we ideally need.
If an individual wants an automatic weapon of any kind or magazine clips, oh and silencers. They just need a special license. We will call it the Human Hunting License.
I am so sick of the NRA and their bullshit.

(16,783 posts)To the dismay of the gun lovers.
All of the slaughter that has taken place in recent years has been done with this weapon. There is NO need for it to be sold to civilians.
Personal protection, my ass! This shooter in Boulder yesterday was not hunting Elk or protecting his home from intruders. Nor is this about the 2nd Amendment. It CEASES to be about the 2nd Amendment when guns are used to murder people in the manner as in Boulder, Aurora, Newtown, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and elsewhere.
If Congress is too chickenshit to act, the people must rise up to demand a stop to the easy access to guns, while doing everything they can to making voting harder.
