Speaking at a church in California last Wednesday, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins lamented President Joe Bidens administration and warned that his tenure will bring Gods judgement upon America, since his policies are literally coming from Hell.
These are challenging times Perkins said. The policies that are coming out of this administration are literally from the pit of hell.
America is in a very, very, I would say, precarious situation, he continued. Weve seen idolatry in different forms, but now it is so blatant. Were in the 11th hour and I believe America is in serious trouble. We are literally shaking our fists in the face of God and challenging God and he is God, and he will do something.
I guess Tony didn't see that golden idol at CPAC, eh?

(70,023 posts)not the way they do, but when we pass a food aid bill, point right at those wingnuts and say it-WE are feeding the poor, just like jesus told us to do, and you are voting no.

(59,498 posts)We have seen him go to church on either Saturday night or Sunday usually with family. This is not about religion. He praised the immoral Trump and his tacky wife. It is a culture war and he is using words from religion as weapons.

(59,498 posts)On this, I think there are two issues. The first is whether a person is perceived as religious. This itself is complex as sometimes fundamentalism (ie orthodox Jews, evangelicals) are credited with being more religious than people in more mainstream or reform branches - when they may simply be more obviously observant. In addition, on our side, there are cultural differences in how public a person is in making their religiosity known.
I think it is fantastic that Biden feels comfortable speaking the way he does. I know that among a few "swing" relatives, who are conservative Catholics, they are becoming very comfortable with Biden. This may keep them on our side in 2024, when being revolted by Trump will not be an issue. In 2006, John Kerry, who may be a very similar Catholic to Biden, spoke at Pepperdine University that it was a mistake NOT to speak of how religion informed his political vision in 2004 - allowing the Republicans to define him. This is something that came naturally with Biden. It is hard to imagine him NOT showing this side of himself.
The second issue is that even more than the Constitution, different religious factions see very different concepts on how the Bible suggests that you live your lives. Back when Kerry spoke in 2006, I sent my daughter, then a Holy Cross world religion major. Her first comment was how Massachusetts/Jesuit/ etc his views were - which given his life is not surprising. Biden's Catholicism is similarly based in social justice. (I loved the photos of both men with Pope Francis!)
In terms of how you live your life, that type of Catholicism, non orthodox Judaism, and mainstream Protestant sects have the kinds of values that are consistent with the bills that the Democrats are fighting for. To use a Jewish phrase, they value Tikkon Olam, or repair of the earth. It is on this basis that interfaith social action efforts in places I have lived are based.
While the more fundamental religious groups have strong values to help people, they usually do not see that government should have any role here. They also may define a "good person" as someone not just observing their religious values but making them the societal norm. Here, gay rights and abortion are two of the most powerful examples. Among some religious conservatives these are bigger issues than feeding the poor, healing the sick etc.
That frame is what led evangelicals to vote for Trump, a disgusting person with no empathy over Biden, who is a genuinely kind person. Not only to vote that way, but to see us as threats to the very fabric of their culture. These people - even if we shove religious rhetoric on our bills in their face - they will likely respond with anger, not agreement.
It really may be a culture war. Over the last 50 years, the culture of our country HAS moved in our direction. Everyone here likely agrees that it needs to continue to move as we are still not really an inclusive fair culture. At this point, they likely pine for a past (the 1950s or pre Civil War) that was never what they think it was. As much privilege as a white male now has -- they instead see that they have lost some since 1950.
