Poll: 31 percent of Republicans think their party backs the American Rescue Plan

according to new polling from Vox and Data for Progress, some likely voters think that the relief package had bipartisan support — even though not a single congressional Republican voted for it. In a survey conducted March 5-7, around the time the stimulus bill passed the Senate (and before Wicker’s tweet), 21 percent of likely voters said they believed Republicans supported the ARP, including 31 percent of Republicans. Sixty percent of likely voters said they thought Republicans opposed the ARP, and 18 percent didn’t know.

Similarly, there are past votes — like the one on the 2017 tax cuts — which some likely voters perceive as bipartisan per the DFP poll, even though they happened solely along party lines. This dynamic indicates that bipartisanship on legislation or nominees is a perception that in some cases doesn’t necessarily align with how lawmakers actually vote.

And when it comes to the recent legislation, Republicans, in particular, seem to think that GOP lawmakers are more supportive of stimulus than they actually are, a trend that echoes past DFP polling. A previous survey has found, too, that some GOP voters think the party is far more generous on economic policies than it really is.

When the House of Representatives passed the American Rescue Plan on March 11, 2021, putting it on the desk of President Joseph Biden for his signature, it had been debated and amended several times. It first passed the House on February 27, 2021, on a near party-line vote of 219 to 212. That was 219 Democratic representatives versus 210 Republican and 2 Democratic representatives. Not One Republican in the House voted for passage. It then went to the Senate and on March 6, 2021, it was amended and approved by the Senate on a party-line vote of 50 to 49; one Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan of Alaska was absent. Not One Republican in the Senate voted for passage.

Individuals are already receiving their stimulus funds: those who have shared banking information with the IRS. Others will be receiving their funds by mail or debit cards in the very near future. One can go online and find out when at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment to find out your status.

As everyone spends their stimulus money, whether it is repairing what has broken, replacing what cannot be fixed, assisting their children, paying their debts or donating to those less fortunate, remember this: Not One Republican wanted any of those things for you or your family.

Not One Republican wanted your cities or counties or states to have any assistance to climb out of the hole of isolation, job loss, taxes not paid and lives not lived.

Not One.

Here in Grand Rapids, MI, the city was already in discussions about job cuts and cuts to services for our citizens. This money ended those talks and is enough that local governments can bank some in case revenues still suffer throughout this year. Total game changer for countless city and county governments across the country.

Local government is where people often see help and action most quickly, because the ARA local government is going to work for the people. This was enough that the way local governments operate normally (crisis to crisis, budget shortfalls etc etc) is going to be changed.
