What's not clear is why the popular media repeat the lie as if it had some grounding in reality. NBC has really been flogging the "crisis" at the border, showing an intense interest in the political and humanitarian situation that they didn't show during the previous four years.

7. I drove along the border back in 2013

I drove from El Paso west to Columbus, New Mexico. No, I did not drive on I-10 between those two points, I drove along New Mexico highway 9, which is much closer. Much of highway 9 is but a stone’s throw away from the US-Mexican border. The dividing line on the US side looked more like the old Iron Curtain between Western Europe and the old Soviet Bloc countries: high fences, barbed wire, plowed Earth to show footprints. It was quite instructive.
