2. It's not the Amendment itself so much as the SCOTUS expanded interpretation of it.

A lot of this absolutist attitude towards gun ownership is very recent and powered by the gun lobby.

For example, in some States, you can get arrested for carrying a folding knife with a longer than three inch blade, but toting around a semi-automatic rifle is perfectly legal. If you walk into a grocery store carrying an ax, people will freak out, but is a common sight these days to see someone carrying a gun around in a store.
