Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) on Monday tried to make the case against statehood for Washington D.C. But given his own states history, it didnt go well.
Rounds tweeted:

Rounds tweet appeared after a day of non sequitur attacks on D.C. statehood, such as the weird (and false) claim by Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) that it would be the only state without an auto dealership. (The U.S. Constitution does not mention auto dealerships as a condition for statehood.)
Many were quick to remind Rounds that the Founders didnt particularly envision statehood for any form of Dakota at all, much less a South Dakota. And in the years prior to its eventual admission as two states, there was just one Dakota: the Dakota Territory. One reason it was split just before admission was to give Republicans two more Senate seats ― including the one Rounds now occupies.

(2,037 posts)all state admissions, then when should we cut off admitting new states? When Adams died, or Hamilton, Jefferson, maybe? OK, George Washington...
Also, the founders never conceived of a state called Tejas, or New Mexico, or Alaska, or Hawaii.
Well, as Mark Twain said on the internet, "If you don't want to be thought of as stupid, then don't open your mouth and remove all doubt" or some such something, something!

ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
Since Lincoln died in 1865 this is a suspiciously late instance, and it provides very weak evidence. Further, YBQ indicated that the phrase was in use years before this date with no attachment to Lincoln. The ascription of the saying to Mark Twain is also dubious.
In any case, your both remembering common attributions correctly!

Getting real tired of these clickbait titles people keep putting out about how so and so got owned or something blew up in their face when all that happened is they got liberal pushback on Twitter that they completely ignore and their base continues to swallow whatever shit they put out.
It creates expectations that do not happen and then people become disillusioned and cynical.

(7,897 posts)by guaranteeing the election of ideologues like him at every level of GOP participation. The Koch and Mercer machines along with the one hiding behind the Federalist Society have bent the GOP into an ideological pretzel far beyond anything imagined in Barry Goldwater's day.
I am surprised that Jan 6th hasn't inspired more in depth investigations of the links between them and the entire MAGA/ Proud Boys network. I expect someone could easily draw the lines between Murdoch's propagandizing and the level of crazy represented by those arrested and those yet to be. To say nothing of that by OANN and Newsmax. Oh yes, and Putin's trolls as well.
The GOP fish is rotten from the head down. I think we need to have a bit of ichthyological defenestration in CPAC Central.
