Colorado Christian Baker Back in Court After Refusing to Bake Birthday Cake for Transgender WomanPublished on March 23, 2021 at 09:06 PM ETBy David Badash
Jack Phillips, the Colorado Christian baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple and won a very narrow victory in the U.S. Supreme Court which was quickly misused by the Trump administration to expand anti-LGBTQ discrimination is back in court this week.
Phillips, who owns Masterpiece Cakeshop, refused to bake a birthday cake for a transgender woman back in 2017. It was to be pink on the inside, blue on the outside, intended to celebrate her gender transition, as Law & Crime reports.
That, too, violates his religious beliefs, Phillips claimed, refusing to serve the woman, attorney Autumn Scardina. In court documents Phillips in 2018 said he could not promote the idea that a persons sex is anything other than an immutable God-given biological reality. He also expressed frustration, suggesting he is the victim is all this.
It seems Im the only person in the state of Colorado who cant live out my beliefs, he told an ultra-conservative anti-LGBTQ think tank, the Heritage Foundation. A gender-transition cake is not something Ive ever made, and its not an event I could celebrate.

(13,976 posts)Does this sometimes baker ask, "who are you, what is your gender, what is your sex life like, and why do you want this cake?"

(82,849 posts)Goodness! Pink and blue in such close proximity to each other. Maybe it's to celebrate a boy-girl set of twins (assuming Phillips' god approves of such sibling gender mixing), but what if it's a transgender thing?! Phillips' god might be really, really mad about that, and Phillips can't take the chance that making a cake like that would land him on the wrong side of the Pearly Gates.

(100,038 posts)1. Is there really only one baker in all of Colorado? And it just happens to be this douchebag?
2. How could you not know this going in? We have these things called Google and Yelp for a reason.
Seriously...

Now, if it's a stock cake that he sells to anybody off the street that would be different.
Not that I approve of his stupid bigotry caused by his nonsensical religion.

(13,976 posts)Were I a baker, I don't suppose I'd care to make a cake with red frosting topped with a sugar Charlton Heston holding a gun over its head.

(5,308 posts)Cake baking and decorating could be viewed as an art, and I don't think a painter should be forced to accept a commission to paint a portrait of Trumpsky, for example.
Thus, it should follow that a baker might rightfully say, "I do not wish to do that.". To say, though, "I will not do for you, because of your sexual orientation, that which I would cheerfully do for another" enters a different territory.
