The SSA has a method of confirming whether you are dead or alive on an ongoing basis.

The IRS has to refresh your direct deposit information, the surest and most efficient way, if you are retired, is for the SSA to send over files of living people that they direct deposit money to via the Treasury. It is one of those problems where if units of government don’t communicate, logjams happen.
